Headcanon #1
Five floats in his sleep sometimes.
And Nine, having the closest room to his, has to lay him to bed. And hold him down (they end up cuddling)
Five: Be my boyfriend?
Nine: You tried to drown me!
Five: I only did that because I like you!
Wait, wait, wait. I was thinking about the last three episodes of Zankyou no Terror, and I thought about something when I was daydreaming about the ending.
Five told Nine that the only reason she had managed to hold onto life this long was, shockingly, him. She also went to say that now that they had met again, she was out of time. She killed herself rather than caving to the illness brought about by the drugs from the institute.
You see, here's where it gets a bit interesting. The thing is, although we see both her and Nine display the same symptoms—headaches, ringing of the ears, ect—we never see Twelve as the victim of them. Rather, they seem to elude him completely. Interesting, but not the point of the post.
The actual point of the post: we see that Twelve knows about these spells, and even seems quite concerned about them. Nine himself must also known what they mean. However, he held out for years on end without passing out on screen a single time, or even feeling faint or weak. Even when he was involved in hardcore accidents.
Five died, unable to carry on any longer, after she told Nine how she had survived. She told him to live for her. Nine, however, died almost immediately after Twelve got shot down. He was unable to live for her. But he let go when he felt that last headache. He didn't even seem to fight it.
So, my conclusion: what if, just like Five lived for Nine—Nine lived for Twelve? Twelve, as well as their goal.
That's why he lets go entirely, just dies, after Twelve does. He leaves behind their one wish, now that their job is done, and joins his companion in death. Always together.
AU where Nine, Twelve and Five still went through their experiments but all escaped together, anyway after they all meet Lisa and became acquainted with her and she starts living with them they go back to the Institute one day in remembrance for all their "brothers and sisters" who weren't as fortunate as them
They then plant a whole garden around the posts, they dug holes for and stuck in the ground, and continue to live on life together as a nice, happy family
After a few months they return and pick the flowers and make flower galands for themselves and to put them around each and every post
Twelve makes Lisa a flower garland out of daisy's and other various flowers, Lisa says her thanks by pressing her lips gently to his cheek
Nine makes Lisa and Five bracelets made out of vines and ties them on each girls' wrist
Twelve, Nine and Lisa all stuff flowers into Five's hair
Then they leave the Institute, but only after they say their prayers
They come and remember the lost children every few months and live for them the best they can

Plot twist!: Five didn't die, she ran away and became a hair model
