Ninebarrow - Lord Exmouth

Lord Exmouth is a cracking traditional song which we heard sung at a festival a few years back. ‘Lord Exmouth’ actually refers to Admiral Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, who was a British naval officer during the Napoleonic Wars. The song is quite indistinct in its references to any particular battle, but rather focuses on Pellew’s qualities as a commanding officer and the qualities of those sailors who served under him.

There are those obtuse enough to attempt to turn this tune into an anti-COVID vaccine parable, but bleach cocktails and horse de-wormer are hardly the stuff of folk medicine.

No, anti-vaxxers are the ones in the crowd here, adopting superstition and anti-intellectualism as science -- most likely at the behest of a preacher who's selling his own brand of snake oil.

As always, when women take on a profession, the conflict is about sex and about power. Somebody said yes, or somebody said no. Or, somebody had enough legitimate success to free the village from the real quack.

The saddest part is that the alleged sorceress is as gentle and diffident as the song this Dorset, England folk duo sing about her
