The Soy Luna Unpopular Opinions Series
Horrible dating advice from the friends: Luna, Nina, Jim, and Yam
Author's note: This is an opinion, solely an opinion which means there is no right or wrong answer. It's normal in a community to have different opinions, in fact that's whats so cool about the world, how everyone is different. This is NOT me trying to impose my opinion. If you agree that's great! If you don't agree, that's great too! Remember opinions are not facts, and solely take this with a grain of salt. I love sharing my thoughts on the show especially since I love all the characters and love how beautifully the plot is written.
During the show, these girls have had crushes and love interests. When they were at war with their hearts and minds they tried to seek what they found to be a trusty source, their friends. As the viewers, we knew that it was horrible advice, and always left the character in love even more confused than what they were before.
When viewing this, most people hated it and found it annoying, I on the other hand loved this because it was so realistic! They're teenage girls navigating life through high school, of course not all of them are going to be perfect at giving advice. They're going through a time when they're going to make mistakes and learn from them. It's part of growing up. No one is an expert at love ever since they're born.
When Luna was confused between Matteo and Simon, Nina wouldn't have a preference, she would always confuse her even more by saying "oh but how do you feel about Simon? Oh but how do you feel about Matteo?" This was completely normal because of course Nina isn't going to take a side, all she wants is for her best friend to be happy. Saying this wasn't the greatest advice, and did confuse Luna even more, but Nina nor any of the girls had the experience with love at the time.
Then comes Luna, Jim, and Yam in S3 constantly telling Nina to date Eric and confess her feelings for him. As a gastina fan, this was painful to watch (lol jk), but seriously I didn't like the whole plot in which Nina dated Eric. I have a whole other rant for that later lol. Anyways, this was actually pretty normal and relatable to typical friendships. Like I said before, in real life, friends aren't usually the greatest at love advice because that's the time when they learn, grow, make mistakes, etc. Luna, Jim, and Yam saw how much pain and sadness Nina went through when Gaston broke up with her, so they assumed that her getting the chance to date a new guy would help her forget about all that pain she dealt with and would help her move on. They thought that in the end this would make her happy and that's truly what they want for their friend Nina, who they care about. Remember as well that Luna, Jim, and Yam have been in relationships but had not so good experiences with them due to mainly miscommunication so of course they're not the best with advice. Also, another thing to note, Jim and Yam took advice for Jim's first date through a Teen magazines.
There is a part in Season three, and probably similarly throughout the series, in which Nina was dating Gaston, and Luna was cheerful when she thought that Eric had a crush on Nina going "oooh you have a secret admirer." In this instance, I felt that Luna was NOT approving or saying for Nina to cheat on Gaston, she was just being silly and joking around about the scenario. As it is, Nina doesn't have much confidence in herself so Luna did this to boost it up even more. Luna wouldn't ever approve of cheating, this is a Disney Channel show lol. Luna always wants everyone to be positive and always even treated Ambar nice when Ambar was mean to her. Luna is a sweetheart. Some may not agree with this and that's okay, but just know that no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes.
