im getting wayyyyy ahead of myself here and probably not at all whats going to happen but. the idea of grace watching the beginning credits sequence of iron lung and seeing the name markiplier and him thinking "isnt that the guy my students watch on youtube" will never not be funny to me

(and the general concept of characters seeing the credits to their movie is not something i EVER see in fics bc its too meta but smth i never stop thinking about. what if they can google ryan gosling clips. what if they watch one of marks fnaf playthroughs. thats hilarious.)

Ok, first off I absolutely love "Not Just Another Bloodymary" I was planning on doing something similar, but just the Iron Lung universe reacting to PHM universe because of how much I love both films.

Now my question, since PHM has a happy ending, is PHM an alternative timeline, or at they still the same timeline? Because if they are the same timeline, Grace is gonna have a metal breakdown because all he's done and gonna doesn’t change anything.

Hello!! I absolutely cannot wait to read your story if you ever go through with it!! Reaction stories are something that is sorely needed in fandoms and I really hope you decide to go through with it!

As for the question, It's kind of hard to say if the two timelines are connected, and it's mostly because of one big problem: the colonization of Mars(which apparently happened in the 1990's) never happened in the PHM universe. It's because of that colonization that we got the space stations for the survivors of the quiet rapture to stay in. I want to try to connect the two canons as much as possible, but there are unfortunately a few things that bungle up the timelines.

Because of this, I'm going to have to get a little fun and funky with it. And by fun and funky, I mean to say:

They shared the same timeline, but because of the events of PHM, it diverged into two separate ones.

I like to think that the Iron Lung universe is what would have happened if Grace failed, or if Grace never met Rocky, Grace never got on the ship, Grace died during transit, or, like, literally any way where the mission went wrong and it ended up with the Hail Mary itself not working, it would lead to the Iron Lung universe. It isn't technically set in stone, but I'm absolutely in love with the idea that everything that happened on the Hail Mary mission was exactly as its name implied: it was a hail mary attempt. There were millions of universes where none of it had ended up working, but for some reason, it was the Grace that's currently in the story(and the one that's in the movie) that was able to succeed. It's a miracle that any of it worked out the way it had at all. I mean, with how many difficulties Grace and Rocky went through alone, there were probably so, so, SO many instances that would have led to its failure. But, because Rocky and Grace were able to find each other and trust each other so wholeheartedly, they were able to do something that should have never succeeded. Call me a sucker for the power of friendship, but that shit is so peak to me.

Anyway, to properly answer your question without rambling, I like to think that the PHM universe is actually the branching off timeline of the Iron Lung universe. Where failure was always going to be guaranteed, but because Grace and Rocky power of friendshipped so hard, they literally created the one universe where they were able to succeed.

There are so many things I would love to get into, such as how astrophage ended up becoming what we see in IL to how the Mars colonisation fits into my timeline, but I should probably leave some stuff for the fanfic 😭

I hope I was able to explain that ok!!! I'll try to write it better once it eventually comes up in the story o7

can we get a list of where the characters are from timeline wise? the iron lung crew is pre-movie, obviously and grace is in the hail mary with rocky (though before or after fishing im not sure), but im wondering where the rest of the phm crew are from

Of course!!

Grace and Rocky are from the point in time when Rocky just moved into the Hail Mary

Simon, Ava, Jack, and David are (like you said) from just before Simon was dropped into the blood ocean

Carl, Dubois, Shapiro, Ilyukhina, and Yao are from one day before the lab explosion

Stratt is a bit more strange since she's from the point in time where the lab explosion just happened, but was stopped by the 'enhanced astrophage'

I'm planning on making their timelines a bit more obvious with future chapters :D thank you for the ask!!

I love my stupid fanfic where the main question I ask myself is 'How much of an asshole can I make Rocky before it seems like he just fucking hates Grace'
