So I’m watching the Okada/Tanahashi WK 10 Main Event with the English Commentary, and Matt Striker just said this;
“Don’t be confused by the names of the moves, I know earlier someone hit the Lung Blower, yet it hit the opponent in the spine, don’t be confused by the names of the moves, look at where the wrestlers land. Look at the impact, and then yourself, you’re able to deduce the amount of damage and what body part may or may not be injured.”
Just for no real reason, in the middle of the match, he comes out with this. I was so baffled as to what its supposed to mean, that I had to write it down and try to figure it out by reading it back to myself...
Meanwhile, in the Ishii vs. Shibata match, he came out with this profundity; “You’re not a violence guy, are you Kevin? You’re a pacifist. I mean, look at what’s going on in the world today; everyone wants to use diplomacy and talking, but you know what works? DROPPING BOMBS!!! And that’s what’s gonna happen right here!”
Good God...
I don’t think I’m ever watching a match with this dude commentating on it again.

The 10th annual Wrestle Kingdom was a phenomenal show that more than delivered on its lofty expectations. Following last years sublime supershow, the 2016 edition had a lot to live up, and ended up being every bit as good.
Things kicked off with the New Japan “Rambo” pre-show that was lots of fun, but nothing approaching good. It seemed to last forever and for some reason Jado, of all people, ended up winning. Still it was fun to see some of the surprise entrants and legends making their way to the ring. The first match of the show proper saw The Young Bucks regain the Junior Tag straps again in a very good high flying contest. As anticipated, this was lots of creative spots and big moves, even if the Bucks winning was slightly baffling. The Jackson’s scored the win after hitting More Bang For Your Buck on Rocky Romero (who may or may not be WWE bound). The bizarre, makeshift tandem of Yano and the Briscoes were crowned the first NEVER Trios champions in a decent contest that went a bit too long for my liking. The Briscoes secured the belts for their team with a Doomsday Device on poor old Tama Tonga (who else?). Jay Lethal retained the ROH Title against Michael Elgin in a good showing that was let down by a screwy finish that wasn’t needed here; Lethal nailed Elgin with a hardback book to set up his Lethal Injection finish.
KUSHIDA (accompanied by Taguchi who was dementedly decked out like Doc Brown from Back To The Future) turned a One Winged Angel into a cradle to win his third IWGP Junior singles title, in an excellent match. This told a compelling story and featured some great selling of the arm by Omega. The only downside for me here was that it didn’t go longer (it got 12 minutes) and that Kenny’s left shoulder was way off the mat for the pin. In the feel good moment of the night, the GBH duo of Makabe and Honma ended Gallows & Gun’s reign of terror in the heavyweight tag division, in another great match, when Makabe pinned Gallows with the King Kong Knee Drop. Hirooki Goto shockingly defeated Tetsuya Naito in another very good display after fending off the interfering Bushi and EVIL and scored a clean win with the Shouten Kai.
Then the real fun started. Ishii and Shibata collided in an out and out war that was painful to just watch, let alone compete in. Veering on overkill at times, it was legitimately hard to watch some of the horrifyingly stiff shots these guys were landing on each other, but the match itself was exceptional and totally compelling. After 17 pulverising minutes, Shibata put the Stone Pitbull away with a PK to win his first ever singles title in New Japan. I hope he gets a good run with the title as he deserves it.
Shinsuke and AJ squared off for the first time ever in an incredible wrestling match. Even though Styles was working through tremendous pain, it didn’t detract from the action for a moment. This was every bit as good as it promised to be and is an even greater achievement considering AJ’s back injury (he put on one of the best performances of his career). Featuring loads of excellent spots and sequences, especially revolving around submission counters; AJ turned a triangle choke into the Styles Clash for a ridiculously close near fall, making Nakamura the first person in NJPW to get up from the move. In the end, Shinsuke devastated the challenger with a top rope Landslide and two stiff Boma Ye’s to hold onto the I.C. championship.
And in the main event, Okada and Tanahashi resumed the greatest feud of the modern era in a superb bout. Whilst not quite as smooth as some of their other contests, that wasn’t the point of this one. Two of the greatest storytellers ever weaved a fantastic tale in the ring, in which both men fought like winning was the only thing that mattered to them in the world. This played perfectly off all of their previous matches, in that neither man could hit their signature spots in the early going, as each has the others number, but then neither could put the other away by the end, kicking out of each others finishers, as they were both desperate not to lose. Finally, after 36 minutes, in one of the most powerful images I’ve seen in a wrestling ring, Tanahashi countered a Rainmaker with a hard slap, but Okada refused to let go, clutching to Tana’s wrist as if it were his life source, finally recovering and nailed him with a series of Rainmakers for the winning three count. If this is to be the last match they ever have (which it most likely won’t) then they closed the book on it in fantastic style. Okada cut a post-match promo proclaiming himself the new ace of the company, in the final passing of the torch. I can’t wait to see where New Japan goes from here.

I don't want to sound like I’m jumping on a bandwagon here, but I legit find Matt Striker insufferable...
