Comments for Module:

Super content heavy, but super useful, especially if you want to do PR in the future. One of the seniors described it as a level-3000 disguised as a level-2000. And according to the Prof herself, she doesn’t need to bell-curve the results because the grades automatically fall into a bell-curve. Intensive module, and I would encourage people to take it if you want some training! Be sure to keep up with tutorials, as they really facilitate in your understanding of the concepts covered. And go for consults – some concepts are similar enough to cause confusion, and it’s always easier for the prof to explain in a smaller group. I enjoyed working with my group (and hopefully they with me), but it was difficult especially with the lack of time (we were the first group to present). We really met up constantly (at Starbucks, some bench, someone’s house), so teamwork is key!

Dr Loh speaks really fast to finish what she wants to cover, but not to the extent that you will get lost. Concepts are not hard to grasp, but the sheer amount of information we get each week can be overwhelming at times. She often shows us videos of good PR campaigns, and it definitely helps to illustrate the concepts! Finals wasn’t easy, but I was rather amused with the references to Harry Potter.

Comments for Module: Very very very content heavy, covered a lot of theories and content. The workload was hell it there was a group assignment, 2 individual essay, and final. No rest throughout the semester. it is a PR mod and I heard it’s what is expected for people in the PR industry, so it would be a good training ground for prospective PR people. Lol, good luck.

Comments for Lecturer: Very theory oriented, pushes you very hard but is always willing to help. Has a dog and showed us photos of her dog. Her dog is super cute!! Her lectures are easy to understand because she provides a lot of examples and explanation. Very approachable person.

NM2203 - SOCIAL MEDIA IN COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT

First of all, what is it?

It basically mixes a combination of communication theories and how they are evident in social media, some business elements such as how to design a strategic campaign and lastly, how to manage social media such as what kind of content interest audiences. Do not expect to learn how to use the various social media platforms though.

Workload + assessment

Honestly, it was manageable. There is a 1 hour tutorial class each week and each tutorial has about 2 questions with 3-4 parts each. However, it is conducted as group discussions usually and there is no need to hand in your work i.e. you can getaway with skimpy work.  Content-wise, there were academic readings that can be as dry as sand paper. My advice would be to skip the readings, skip the textbook and focus on the lecture notes. The final exam tested only what were in the notes and tutorials and were largely application essay questions and giveaway MCQs. 

Since I’m a business student and majoring in marketing, I figured I have some slight advantages in this module. Which I did, since the group project and presentation was very reminiscent of a typical business module project. For people with similar experience, you might want to keep close tabs on the group report, just to make sure that essential elements are there since the majority of the cohort are year 1 and 2 comm students who may not be used to writing such reports. Also, wear formal wear during the presentation; it was stated quite clearly in the project outline to present the project as though it was to a real client. I was stunned like a vegetable when I went to class and saw ALL the other groups were in jeans and crop tops. Seriously, guys?

Individual assignment - start early! Its designed like a case study except you have to hunt for the example yourself. That will take time since you have to be certain that the example you selected is succinct enough to answer the question and apply theory.

Overall, I got an A grade (honestly a first for me).
