Dear Interior Secretary Zinke

I can't believe how often we need to write to you. You cannot still believe that drilling for oil is a productive, safe, or even sensible thing to do. Drop the search for fossil fuels and invest your attentions and budget in renewables. You will prevent spills, water table contamination, cleanups, air pollution, and species devastation if you just back off your retrograde mission of sucking the oil out of the ground.  ESPECIALLY in coastal areas, where the extreme weather will damage your rigs and increase all the risks. You know, the extreme weather brought about by the climate change wrought by burning fossil fuels. THIS IS NOT A CONTROVERSY.

The American people do not want our fragile coastal waters opened to dangerous oil and gas drilling. Yet your administration is pushing to allow drilling across vast swaths of our Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the eastern Gulf Coast. It’s unconscionable, and it must be stopped.

Expanding offshore drilling threatens our communities and whales and other marine life with catastrophic oil spills, blocks our path to a clean energy future and keeps us shackled to the heavily polluting fossil fuels of the past, while doing nothing to make us more energy independent. The administration’s scheme wastes federal resources and puts fossil fuel industry profits before the public good. It’s nothing more than another handout to private oil companies, forcing taxpayers to continue subsidizing the fossil fuel industry.

Secretary Zinke, please direct your agency to reject drilling in these cherished ocean places for oil that America doesn’t need, just to bolster fossil fuel industry profits. The public has spoken, and the science is clear. Please protect the American people, not the oil companies, and stop reckless oil and gas drilling off our shores. Thank you.
