"No Borders, No States"

December 26, 2023 - A migrant caravan marches through Mexico to the American border chanting slogans. The migrants are looking for a better life in the rich country, fleeing their homes to escape poverty and violence largely caused by decades of US intervention across Latin America. [video]
This one goes out to the woman waiting at the food bank who loudly complained about people coming to the US and not knowing English, shortly after a Spanish-speaking person needed help, which caused delays due to a lack of bilingual people being available / stepping forward.
It's a region semi-known for its orchards, which also means migrant workers, which also means some migrant workers eventually settle down in the area and raise kids and become part of the community. I live in the wealthier, whiter, small tourist/college town, not the poorer, still white but not as white, towns around us. But even so, one would assume that at least one of the volunteers at the food bank would know Spanish. Or that one of the people waiting would know it and would step forward to help. Or that the volunteer would at least know numbers from one to four in Spanish. Or be able to read aloud (even mispronounced would be fine) the Spanish words that are on the form, right next to the english words, when trying to explain how to fill out the form.
But no, instead we got a significant delay and a loud racist.
I'm in favor of immigrants who can't speak English.
(I'm also in favor of free-to-access ESL lessons and translation services, as well as other changes to our systems that would give people the time for and the access to language skills and tools. And I'm in favor of our educational systems shifting to encourage bilingualism as a cultural norm. But that's not the point of this post. Nor is this post about the fact that the majority of monolingual Spanish speakers in the area are at least part indigenous to this continent and speaking the language of one colonizer, while the majority of monolingual English speakers in the area are primarily descended from Europeans and speaking the language of another colonizer. Anyway, fuck you, racist lady waiting at the food bank.)
