This is going to be kind of rambly but I think one of the things I love most about Wonder Woman is the way they shoot Diana rescuing Steve. She’s backlit by the sun under water when she is dragging from the wrecked plane so that we can see her against the watery background. She’s backlit again on the beach when we see her through Steve’s eyes when he’s regained consciousness. and this ends up giving her a sort of visual halo, allowing us to see her as this angel, which is what Steve Trevor canonically calls her, his term of endearment for Diana. And i love how that carries through the film. 

Diana is Steve’s angel, his actual angel. This isn’t a softening of her character, although angel as a term of endearment tends to invoke softness (not to say Diana isn’t or can’t be soft). She’s an angel as in warrior of god, she’s the fateful lightning and the terrible swift sword. She gives him hope and light in the darkness. And the other part of this is the symmetrical nature of the film and its imagery. 

At the beginning of the film she lifted him out of the water, saved his life, through her actions and then later her words, she convinced him to bring her back to man’s world so she could help stop this terrible destructive war. At the end she’s lifted him up again. This time to his death. Throughout the film we’ve seen him grow into a man with hope and conviction, in large part because of Diana. So she has lifted him up, in a way quite literally as he takes to the skies in pursuit of a fiery death. Angels are warriors and messengers of god. 

Diana comes to man’s world with Steve to fight to end the war, to destroy Ares, the enemy of man and peace. She brings to Steve a message of hope, something that the storyline suggests he has forgotten in his time as a spy and a soldier. And she is his angel specifically for bringing him that message, for saving his life, for lifting him up. So Steve doesn’t call her angel in this telling of the Wonder Woman story, yet the film makes it explicit that she is his angel. The messenger, the warrior, the believer in hope, the fateful lightning and the terrible swift sword.
