The local people tried to save him but as they could not find his body, they came together with this idea to throw #stickyrice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body. But what does Duanwu actually means leh? See, the actual date falls on ... the 5th day of the Chinese calendar 5th month. I think Duan supposed to mean double, and Wu means 5, in Mandarin, hence the name DuanWu festival.
