In the picture stand Noor and Umar, brothers, who sell fancy bags in a kiosk in Malleswaram 8th cross, adjacent to Bhagwan Stores. Missing in the picture is their youngest sibling Sarwar Pasha, who has dedicated himself to a cause that Umar (extreme right) started around 30 years ago. My mother has been buying bags from Umar for as long as she can remember and when we stood talking to him yesterday, he pulled open a huge file from his bag and showed it to us. A file full of pictures and documents of abandoned dead people who were were given a burial by these brothers. Umar and Noor are angels for the mendicants and homeless who heave their last tormented breath on streets. "We find an abandoned corpse, we report to the police, check for missing complaints, take permissions and give the departed a burial. Cremation if it's a Hindu, burial if it's a Muslim. Whatever we earn from this business, we use that money to fund our cause" said Umar. I saw a huge file of pictures attached with their respective documents from police stations and crematorium/burial grounds. "We don't want money or praise for our work. We do this because every man who has come into this world deserves a decent send off" says Noor. I couldn't say much, I still can't but all I can do is support them by buying bags and help spread a word about their selfless act which has remained unfettered by caste, creed, religion and community.
