The opened letter still sat on the table, months after it had been sent and months after he'd actually read it. Steve never expected to get the letter, the one that said someone he knew had been killed in action. But there in black and white were the words he hadn't wanted to read; Bucky, his best friend, had been killed in action. Even worse, there was no body to be sent back for burial. It had been the worst funeral he'd ever been to and he'd had to bury his ma not long before his friend went off to war.
But months had passed and there were days when the pain of losing his friend was just as pain as it had been the day he got the letter. Sometimes he thought he saw Bucky out of the corner of his eye. Those were the times when he told himself that he needed to work harder if he was ever going to make rent and keep the small apartment he and Bucky had shared before the war. He knew it wouldn't look good if he slacked off work and got sick. It also wouldn't look good if people knew he was seeing a dead man around every corner.
