A few weeks ago I spent some time with members of Woolston and Thelwall protection camp, an anti-fracking camp situated by Woolston aqueduct near Warrington. The site is a proposed IGas coal bed methane (CBM) drilling site, which would require drilling through two aquifers.

The camp has established themselves there in opposition to the proposals for excavation, which could cause potential damage to the surrounding wildlife. Opposition to ‘fracking’ consider the process an attempt by large energy companies to profit from the dregs of resources that won’t benefit the average person in the street. Residents of the camp are highly knowledgeable about the destructive effects the process will have on the area. Campers are present on the camp in their own free time, sometimes after work or sacrificing time with their loved ones and families in order to support the camp. It is their mission to educate and advise the locals in the area about the effects that fracking would have in their locality, and the remainder of the UK. The facts and dangers regarding the fracking process are largely omitted from the media.

The community is familiar with the local area, the River Mersey and the wildlife that thrives there. Wildlife which would be hugely affected by such a destructive process.
