so while watching the new episode today, when stiles was asked what he is, he replied "uhm, better..?" and like do you think he's not human anymore and that the nogitsune changed him?

Totally could be a clue!!? It is strange that Stiles didn’t just say “human" but equally it could be his old hang up of being the ordinary one amongst his friends and he didn’t want to seem ‘lesser’ or show a perceived weakness in front of Liam. (Even though humanity is in no way actually a weakness). 

The thing about Teen Wolf is that I do honestly believe some things are actually deliberate and that clues are placed in the show well in advanced if you are paying attention (i.e. the skull stickers during season 3 as a precursor to the Calaveras) but sometimes the deliberateness can still be a red herring meant to distract us from what is really going on? 

However, ever since the ‘death’ of the Nogitsune I’ve been in a perpetual state of "what even the fuck". I mean I think his friends are just glad to have old Stiles back but the question is do we really have old Stiles back?????

A couple of things to take note of - 

Deaton: Most of us were concentrated on the bizarre sight of a creature materializing from out of the floor. [3x23: Insatiable] 

Stiles’ flesh and blood human body was possessed by the Nogitsune dark spirit (I assume through a doorway in his mind from the Nemeton which exists across worlds including that of the dead). Then Stiles goes all evil on us but when it came to their eventual separation his original body barfed up bandages and smoke formed into a copy of Rhys and then was unwrapped to become a second Stiles. 

As human as he may appear to be now, this Stiles, did NOT come into the world in a normal way. It was entirely supernatural.

Kira: Hang on how are you sure which Stiles is which? 

Melissa: Well medically you seem okay. You’re definitely a real person.Stiles: Okay so I’m real but am I really me?

This is the crux of the issue.

Despite saying that Stiles is a healthy human boy. 

A) THAT IS NOT HIS ORIGINAL BODY

B) IT MATERIALIZED OUT OF BLACK SMOKE (KIND OF LIKE THE ONI)

I mean I could go all philosophical on your ass and start waxing lyrical about the nature of identity (please actually stop me hahaha omg to late).

It’s a big question to be quite honest one that doesn’t actually have a satisfactory answer.

Are we our bodies? If we are then there is not a single cell in your body right now that was there when you were 7 years old so are you actually the same person? What ensures the continuing existence of you? Is it your memories? But what if your memories were copied perfectly and downloaded into a clone (or a robot hehehe) which one is you now? Are they both you? What about a person that gets amnesia who are they then?

It’s an endlessly fascinating topic but from my experience (writing essays on this a long time ago) it is generally accepted that the only way for identity to be constant is if the core of you is preserved and this is when ideas of the soul often comes up (and a higher power).

These issue are then debating on in even greater detail but for the sake of Teen Wolf. Lets assume that souls do exist. Let’s even call them spirits because I’m pretty sure that spirits exist in Teen Wolf. Peter was dead. Lydia and Meredith are probably communicating with dead souls. Etc etc blah blah. Not to mention the fact that the Oni formed out of fireflies which in Japanese mythology are considered to be souls of the dead and as I have already mentioned the Oni were also black smoke. I hope I am kind of building a  case for my point of view on this topic :)

Okay so regardless of whether or not it is Stiles’ original human body it is his original soul/spirit and that is apparently what is important…or at least I am trying to tell you that this is what is probably important. I mean if you are still following what I’m rambling about congratulations. 

Also to kind of support this analysis…

From this what I have gathered is that when Stiles literally divided into two people it wasn’t a clean break. A small amount of the Nogitsune’s soul/spirit remained inside this ‘second’ Stiles but it is a negligible amount. Not enough to stop him from being marked with the Kanji for self by the Oni. 

It is thus possible that when the Nogitsune was killed this tiny bit of it’s soul/spirit left inside Stiles survived (hahahaha he’s a horrocrux i’m sorry omg). While it’s not enough to control or possess and for all outward appearances he is indeed “better” it may have some interesting after effects. 

Stiles can be better but still changed. This fits in with the theme of “can’t go back” as he can never go back to who/what he was before. My prediction is that it is going to be something to do with dreams and dream walking? The power of the mind and the doors in the mind and all that jazz. Maybe. 

Wow did I even answer your question at all? Can I get around answering it by saying Stiles is Stiles and questions of his ongoing humanness are at the end of the day likely to be irrelevant because what makes us human in the first place?

This whole thing also actually ties into one of my ongoing theories about mirrors in Teen Wolf and also now werewolf eye colours. Let me just say that mirrors like the eyes were considered to be reflections of/windows to the soul. If anyone want’s my explanation for Stiles continuing association with mirrors….well it’s about his soul (or specifically actual dark part of his soul which would be the Nogitsune leftovers and what I like to call his shadow self).
