He’s not sure why Silas was the first to come to mind, of all the people he could ask to join him. Although, perhaps it was the other’s ever sweet demeanor, which would do his ego favors in the beginning when he’ll surely make his fair share of mistakes. Or perhaps it was just that Silas seemed good company for every occasion. Regardless, he chooses not to dwell on the ‘why’ and instead stare at his phone, eagerly awaiting a timely response.

When Berkut was a child, perhaps 6 or 7 years old, he was taken on one of his first real journeys beyond the capital to sit in on one of his uncle’s diplomacy meetings. Despite how little he knew of its importance, the prospect of it excited him. But so did most opportunities he had to spend with his uncle, as few as they were. The preparations, and then eventually the meeting itself overwhelmed him, however, and when one of the men asked him a question (something quite benign and not politically charged in the slightest, but so traumatic was it that Berkut has since blocked it from his mind), this ordinarily gregarious child found no words and looked meekly to his uncle to speak for him instead.

The rest of the meeting passed in a blur, and Berkut wished for nothing more than to disappear. He remembers that his uncle spoke not a word to him when it was all over (this was because Rudolf had nothing to say, as is usual for such a taciturn man, and not because he was disappointed), and in his shame, set to wandering the estate. As evening came, he had left its walls and taken to a trail he had heard about from the villagers, which led to the docks.

The ocean was, back then, a foreign thing, not even seen in the handful of paintings that decorated Rigel Castle’s otherwise austere walls, and when Berkut looked upon that vast stretch of blackness, he felt as if he could fall right into it and be swallowed up. Slowly, he inched toward the end of the pier and as he contemplated that horizonless sea, the clouds dispersed from the moon and sent down a shaft of ethereal light, illuminating and shimmering on the crests of little waves. Where there had been frightening emptiness, now there was form, and he was entranced by its beauty.

Years later, Berkut attended the first ball thrown in his honor when he turned thirteen. Guests and relatives alike bombarded him with questions about his studies, his future, whether or not he had attended meetings, decrees he had no business deciding upon at so young an age, etc. Irritated, overwhelmed, and disappointed in himself for not thinking of better answers, he fled the ballroom for space alone.

But he found a girl instead, with periwinkle hair and when she turned, the shimmer of the moon in her eyes.

“I wasn’t sure how long you were going to sleep, but I had an idea you’d wander into the kitchen as soon as you woke. I dropped by just to see if you had keeled over yet. Letting myself in, obviously. Honestly, though. You can’t tell me you’re bedridden and then expect me not to w” 

A word is vigorously scratched out here.

“check on you. Anyway, I left some medicine on your bedside table, and there’s soup on the stove. (Sick people can’t taste anyway so it should be fine.) Report in after you’ve eaten and all that.

“First off, I must explain that I had picked up the original text of this book, which happened to be in French. This is not a feat for me as I am multi-langual, but I did also read the English version afterwards and found some significant changes in translations.

The book; however, is marvelous. It’s advertised as a children’s tale but there is far more mature aspects in this novel. There are multiple themes in this read, but like most books, the bildungsroman archetype is very apparent with the concept of growing up.

Again, I’m not one to be interesting in children’s tale but the ultimate ending left me shocked. It felt a slightly bit dreary to me in the end, but that was only because of the impact it built up throughout the novel.

It’s a shorter one, but definitely a fantastic read. Rarely do I give high scores but I believe this book deserves an 8/10.”

9. what’s one character trait you have in common with your muse? one trait you don’t have in common?

well, both zeiss and i are super socially awkward HAH. like you wouldn’t think it because i’m about 500x better at communicating my thoughts and feelings clearly and efficiently through writing ( smth i hc is the same for him ) but as soon as i have to verbalize it it’s like it takes me 3 years to get to the point and that’s not even counting all the times i trip over my own words and syllables and mix up sounds and generally become a jumbled mess. 

however, i can only wish i had any of zeiss’ general faith and optimism. in his shoes, i would probably end up a lot more like heath: disillusioned and critical. heck i haven’t had anything that bad happen to me and i’m already like that. zeiss retains his sense of hope and ideals even having seen the world and other people at their worst, and i think that’s both really commendable and really moving, honestly. people may definitely find him naive for it, but i don’t really think it is at all. if anything, it shows strength.

10. what part of your muse’s canon is your favorite? which part made you fall in love with them and decide you were going to write them?

i’ve already talked about zeiss’ shin support and leif’s entire leonster siege arc. for mathilda, it’s hard to nail down what moment made me go “yes, this one”, esp. because prior to the dlc, she only had her recruitment scene and then her clive support. so i can’t really pin down an exact moment for her, but it was more of the overall feeling i got from her made me want to write her, i think. 

my favorite canon moment overall was probably the single line: “flattery will get you everywhere.” you two are so gross.

11. which part of your muse’s canon is your least favorite? or are there any parts you struggle to understand or rationalize in your own writing?

ig i’ll continue the mathilda trend from last ask. again, hard to pick least favorite since she only has so many moments. ( the terrible, terrible cg with fernand notwithstanding because seriously who drew that and why. ) all in all, her canon seems to fit together pretty well. at first, as i’ve mentioned, i struggled with the idea of her being okay with the fact clive never told her about the plan to take rigelian citizens hostage, but i managed to implement that into the nature of their relationship after some thought.

i am a little bit annoyed that she doesn’t feature at all in the post-battle conversation after clive says that he may have made some errors. like does she just leave the scene? where is she in the rest of that dialogue?

also the fact that she is distinctly missing from the ending scene with fernand. i understand she’s a character you can miss, but you could at least have alternate dialogue with / without her or something.
