Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day Two - Other places, other spaces
We talk these days about how diffuse fandom has gotten, but to be honest, it's always been that way. Some people were on Usenet, while others were going to cons and composing letters of comment and still others were using mailing lists. The way we interact with other fans is varied as well - Twitter, Facebook, journaling, Tumblr, and others; each platform has its pros and cons, supporters and detractors.
Part of the philosophy behind the Fandom Snowflake Challenge is to bring us all together, regardless of where our fannish hearts lie. And to that extent, let's share our love of our communal spaces - regardless of platform.
Day 2
In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Fandom tends to clump together, and that's has both positive and negative effects. It's the basis of our support networks, our intertwined lives, but it also tends to isolate us and we forget the existence of other fans outside of our chosen place. Maybe it's time to reach out to fans on other platforms, in other places and say hello.
--------------------------------------------------
Now, I could go for the predictable and sing the praises of the archive where I make my lair (The Silmarillion Writers' Guild), which would be easy to do, but instead, I'm going to concentrate on humor, which is a tricky thing. There are a lot of beautifully drawn Tolkien-based comics and the like out there (not mine by any way, shape, or form), but crafting the element comedy and getting it right is a tricky business. Here are a few that make the mark in my estimation:
Flaming Bee. This contains Elrohir's Web Comic by Darth Fingon. Absurdist Tolkienian humor. "Are You Smarter Than a Vala" is particularly funny IMO.
Nolemë on deviantArt. Her Tolkienverse and Potterverse series is a major hoot. And she makes cookies decorated with Tolkien characters!
And on the T-place (uh, here, I guess)...
Stupid Tolkienian Comics - The comics appearing in this Tumblog have been known to cause me to Jackson Pollock my laptop's screen. A couple of examples: Maedhros and Beren facing their worst enemy: a formal dinner with steak on the menu and Melkor's orc minion searching Craig's List to find some help for his boss in dealing with that Silmarilli business...and finding a date for Melkor. Part of a series.
fieldofheathers-stuff. A vat of what-the-hell hilarity! Gifs, comeeks, artwork, and whatnot.
