Nólemë the Steadfast · Sister of Finwë
“It had been said in their old lives that the Minyar were less tied to the earth than any of the other clans, were more apt to dreams and prophecy. ‘One to the stars and the over-sky. (The Minyar) One to the fires of the earth and the deep burning. (The Tatyar). And One to the winds and the waters. (The Nelyar). So went the old saying.”
The Once and Future Kings.
Chapter Twenty-one. Opening the Sky.
my friend what you and I would call a sports bra a Tatyar would first suspect of being a creation of Melkor because it looks too good to be true, and then upon the form of a breasted beloved pants would be ruined because THE TITTY DON'T MOVE LOOK AT HOW IT SHOWS OFF THOSE SHOULDER MUSCLES
World building is a serious thing that I take super seriously all the time with utter seriousness.

Nólemë Cestarë || Sister of Finwë
I don't have a lot to say about her backstory yet because she kind of yeeted herself into existence by some odd chance and my brain going places.
What I have established so far about her is
a) She awakened a little while after Finwë, he took one look at her and was like yeah that's my family
b) She didn't follow her brother to Valinor because she had a feeling™ and she didn't want to abonden those of her people who remained behind
c) She's ready to kick anybody who insults her family even though she's probably like a head shorter than your average Eldar
d) She and Feanor would probably get along like a house on fire (heh)
e) She doesn't care about your rules she's just gonna make up her own
Also: Nólemë is an older name Tolkien had in mind for Finwë? I think? I believe I read that somewhere but I'm not sure where...

I feel like the Tatyar loved piercings - so many places to put cool baubles! - and it became a custom that survives in both Avari and Ñoldor. I also feel like the Elves pierced bits on a whim and didn’t really regard piercings as permanent, given that they live forever and heal from wounds better than humans. If an Elf gets tired of a piercing, they can just take it out and it will heal as if it was never there, in a relatively short time! I’m all for blingy sparkly Elves
I’ve been chomping at the bit wanting to share a piece of artwork for a story of mine done by bunn . (Nothing a writer loves more than art based upon their own work! I was thrilled with this picture. It’s been a while.) She does not object to me sharing, so this is it:
heartofoshun wrote a very early Silmarillion-setting story I liked. It's called We Weren't Born to Follow, about the Tatyar, the not-yet-Noldor deciding under the stars whether to follow Finwë and journey West to Aman. I loved the image of Míriel under starlight and the Noldor watching Finwë speak, his eyes full of light, everything colored by starlight and firelight, so I tried to draw it.
The line she pictures above is, “He raised one hand high above his head to gain their attention. The people quieted and stopped to look at him, waiting near breathless for him to speak.” --We Weren’t Born to Follow Not exactly deathless prose, but her artwork makes it better.
Please respect the artist and not copy or re-post without permission.
Can I ask where the massacre of the Tatyar of Nevrast comes from? I am very curious now. Is it an headcanon or canon? it has been so long since I read the Silmarillion!
It’s a headcanon! I dont believe there could have been such a well sheltered and protected part of Beleriand that was “uninhabited” so my answer is that Turgon got rid of the original inhabitants who would not give way and allow his rule over them, (incorporating into his people the Sindar whom the Tatyar had allowed to settle there after an alliance with Thingol. The leaders of these Sindar aided in the genocide by giving away locations of wells and villages given their greed for more land which the Tatyar inhabited. Thingol’s inaction on this and acceptance of his niece and nephews would later bite him in the arse) and later historians were not about to admit Turgon waged a genocide against the Tatyar which Fingolfin barely smacked his hand for (and kind of participated in with his shitty policies) and so insisted the land was uninhabited.
