NOBEL PRIZE

In 1895 the will of Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel established annual prizes to be awarded in chemistry, literature, peace, physics, and medicine and in 1968 Sweden’s central bank added a prize for economics. In addition to a monetary award each recipient receives a gold medallion. In 2014, invited to participate in the first No Limit Festival in Borås, Sweden, Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra honored perhaps the most influential person to come from Sweden with a five-story reproduction of the medallion. This anamorphic work—despite wrapping around two sides of a building the medallion appears to be perfectly round when viewed from a particular angle—looks out over the Viskan River from Södra Strandgatan.  @kobrastreetart  @nolimitboras  @nobelprize_org

“SWEDISH WILDLIFE”

“Dulk is a hungry and insatiable all terrain illustrator. Urban art, illustration and graphic design are his fields, his twisted imagination does the rest” says @wdwlls. Inspired by a fascination with watching birds, fish, dogs, and horses around his childhood home Antonio Segura Donat, aka Dulk, copied illustrations of exotic animals in his spare time. Applying his imagination to create imaginative visual stories with a touch that Borås, Sweden’s No Limit Festival calls “bizarre, burlesque and affectionate,” Dulk holds on to an innocent childlike viewpoint while also occasionally serving as a warning about environmental mismanagement. This visual tale was told on Södra Nybrogatan in Borås for No Limit 2015.  @dulk1  @nolimitboras

“OPHELIA”

Born with an active imagination Natalia Rak knew from childhood that she wanted to paint and find ways of expressing her ideas. She pursued a wide variety of artistic media including drawing, screen-print, graphic design, package design, traditional graphic, painting, and sculpture, and spent several years mastering a new medium—the spray can. Influenced by old photos, comics, book illustrations and illustrators, along with daydreams, her portraits often appear to be drawn from fairytales or imaginary worlds. Rak’s 7-story-tall painting “Ophelia”, on Sparregatan in Borås, Sweden, was the tallest mural done for the No Limit festival in 2014.  @nataliarakart  @nolimitboras

“OUT OF SIGHT”

In 1826 Borås, Sweden saw its first printing company open, and soon after the city had its first journal, and the local dependency on news was established—only interrupted for a week when the town burned to the ground a year later. Eventually becoming the Borås Tidning in 1938, and transitioning to a daily in 1949 the local paper has witnessed the rise and fall of newspaper circulations everywhere, but while its down almost a third from its peak of more than 60,000 and the format has seen some changes, it marches on. In 2015 Los Angeles street art icon Tristan Eaton was in Borås for the No Limit festival, and painted this mashup of different images in what Upper Playground refers to as “his signature patchwork imagery” on the side of the Borås Tidning offices at Allégatan and Fabriksgatan.  @tristaneaton​  @borastidning  @nolimitboras

“MOMENTS OF LIFE”

German artist Hendrik Beikirch, aka ECB, rejects the sleek youthfulness of so much of our urban visual aesthetic. His large eye-catching monochromatic murals of both documentary and fictional portraiture present genuine characters, clearly with stories to tell—despite their anonymity, or perhaps all the more because of it. His additions to our urban landscape have been called “our silent companions, reminders of our common humanity and representations of both actual individuals and the diverse populations of the modern city.” In 2014 for the No Limits festival in Borås, Sweden, this ECB portrait overlooking busy Arlagatan was recreated from a piece done a year earlier for Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark.  @nolimitboras  @galeriewolfsen

NO LIMIT

Born in Brooklyn in the 70s James M. Rizzi says he discovered art early and was shaped by the raw energy of the city. After studying at New York’s School of Visual Arts Rizzi followed “in the footsteps of the pioneers of street art . . . adding his colorful interpretations to the urban landscape.” Now living in Dallas, Rizzi has painted all over the world, using motion, scale, and color to compose work described as “a magical symphony of shapes and forms, all pulsating into one another.” This 250-foot long wall overlooking the Viskan River was painted in 2017 for the No Limit festival in Borås, Sweden, and Brooklyn Street Art says “It’s appropriate that his work is here by the river, as he speaks of fluidity when describing the gestural abstract style that he has become known for.”  @jmrizzi  @nolimitboras
