page 461 - the Lapp School of Economics foretold that one day the people would look up and see a star within the sun. The sign would precede a period of unlimited economic growth, untethered from the restrictions imposed by finite ecological limits

The logic was that a super-charged solar object (the star sun) would generate enormous quantities of solar radiation, encouraging run-away lichen growth, and in turn feed reindeer and allow an expansion of the herds; effectively creating a pool of capital that endlessly grows and replicates.

The article is behind a paywall and the password was lost so no one has read anything but the abstract for centuries.

And yet, some still believe.
