I’m going to preface this by saying I’m white so if I’m out of line here call me out, BUT

if you’re GOING to do a story about pseudo-racism, which is already dicey, why wouldn’t you use the 2 characters who are canonically mixed already? like it’s fine if they want to bring in new characters, because then it just brings up the issue that nobody really talks about anyway

like for Lagoona, nobody ever treats her like a hybrid. as far as they’re concerned, she’s a sea monster. if you look at her, you probably wouldn’t even know she’s a hybrid.

and for Jackson and Holt, well, there’s a big issue here. because Jackson is not monster enough to be in the monster world, but Holt isn’t normie enough to be in the normie world. they don’t belong anywhere, in everyone’s eyes. (this is really only brought up in Ghouls Rule, when Jackson is trying to hide his normie side bc everyone is being so anti-normie) They’re already treated differently by some students, and nobody is quite sure how to handle them, or what category to put them in, or anything. They should fall right in with the new hybrid students, because they would know better than anyone else what it’s like, even if their situation is. quite unique

Like, a dialogue should have been opened about this. like, Frankie says that everyone has a place at Monster High, no matter what, and Jackson’s like, excuse me? what about all the times you guys gave me crap about being a hybrid? and they’re like oh we haven’t done that but he’s like uh, yes, you have. and it’s because I’m a hybrid, but apparently I’m not the right kind of hybrid for you guys. like you’ve never given Lagoona any crap, and now these new kids show up and they’re fine, why wasn’t I fine?

I really want some nice moments between Lagoona and Jackson/Holt here, basically.

Also, I know it’s just high school, but most of these kids are in inter-monster relationships. Cleo’s “shouldn’t they have to pick a side” or whatever it is, that comment really gets under my skin because it’s like, haven’t you ever thought about the future? being with Deuce forever? your children someday? I did when I was in high school and I wasn’t even dating anybody. surely Lagoona and Gil, at least, who’ve faced near-constant prejudice from Gil’s parents, must have given it some thought?

idk I just feel like buried under all the crap the movie was, there’s what the movie could have been, and it could have been beautiful.

Huh, I thought it looked like water, and Steven was holding what water he could in his hands.

Fortunatly, this wouldn’t change too much. If Pearl had any water in her gem at that time, Lapis could have theoretically used it to hold herself together as she fell apart, dissolving into the water as she turned to dust, or even just creating a barrier between her gem and the rest of the world. Because she was never separated from herself, and because she was so powerful in the first place, she managed to hold together long enough for the effect of the time travel device’s destruction to wear off and reconstructed her gem.

It’s a little more out there, but it’s still plausible.

It would also open the door for Desert Glass to also have been a time traveler, as she could have been using her own construction powers to hold her gem together, but that’s not a headcannon I think I subscribe to.
