Author Note; hope this turned out okay! I haven't written Jinx in a while and I wasn't quite sure how to end the fic, but I hope you guys like it regardless.
~~~
Jinx was sure she was done with siblings. After her experience with Vi, why would she want another one? What if she messed up again and lost everything? But... there was something about you that made her reconsider this. Maybe it was the state she had found you in; alone, afraid, it reminded her a lot of herself back when she was your age. Jinx couldn't just leave you behind. After all, someone had been there to pick her up too. You deserved that same care.
When she found you, you were quieter than she expected. Jinx didn't understand why. Weren't kids loud and annoying? That's how every other one seemed. You were... shy? No, that wasn't quite the word. The more time that Jinx spent with you she started to figure out why you were different. Why you couldn't hear when she called your name; at first Jinx assumed you were ignoring her. Until she realized you just couldn't hear. You were deaf. Honestly, Jinx found herself a little jealous. It would be nice to live in a world without noise.
It took some time for her to get used to. Jinx tried a number of ways to communicate with you, trying to find one that you would be most comfortable with. One that you seemed to like the most was when Jinx would set off bombs of colour to get your attention. She'd make sure you were looking her way, before she'd let it off. Every time it made you laugh and smile, one of the few sounds Jinx had come to love.
The evening was quiet, you were curled up in the little blanket fort you and Jinx had built a few hours prior. Simply admiring the various lights that were hung up inside. The colours Jinx had spray painted onto the blankets. As for Jinx, she was at her work table. Tinkering away at some new invention she had been invested in lately. You could see her perfectly from the opening of the fort, so as you laid there you watched her. Something about Jinx brought you comfort you hadn't felt in a long time. To you, Jinx was everything. She was family.
Jinx could feel your eyes on her and it made her smile. She spent a few more minutes on her invention before she got up and made her way over to you. Jinx joined you in the fort, sitting cross legged beside you.
"Hey, kiddo," Jinx said, despite knowing you couldn't hear her. She just liked watching the way your eyes would narrow, trying to read her lips and understand what she was saying. She knew you could do it, so sometimes she would just talk to you. Help you get better at the skill and all.
When you were confident in what she had said to you, you gave a little wave back. Saying hello. This made Jinx smile a little more.
"C'mere you," Jinx wrapped her arms around you and pulled you close. Feeling you relax against her. The rest of the night went by smoothly, the two of you cuddled up together in the blanket fort. At some point, you fell asleep against Jinx. Not that she minded.
TW: mentions of violence, recent manga spoilers (Battle of 3 Deities), canon divergence, canonical character deaths, dark Mikey
A/N: I seem to be on a roll with short drabbles based off songs I am obsessed with currently. The title is from the song 'Afterlife' by Avenged Sevenfold. Also, the reader plays an almost background role (sorry) and the main focus is Takemichi. Needed a coping mechanism 😅
Please enjoy ♥️
"Takemichi."
White.
That's all that greeted the boy's eyes as they fluttered open. Was he in the hospital?
"It seems like he's waking up," another more familiar voice spoke. It was a voice that the faux-blond never thought he'd hear again. Draken.
Takemichi pushed himself up from his lying position, surprised to not feel the usual twinge of pain. Especially since the last he remembered, Manjiro was throwing him around like a ragdoll and beating his life from him. Oh.
Standing in front of him were a group of people that he never thought he would meet again. Draken had his arm around a happy-looking Emma; Baji was grinning down at him with a healthier appearance than he last had; and a pair that he never personally met. Shinichiro Sano stood beside a smaller female, both of them smiling softly towards the younger boy.
"W-What happened?" His voice seemed filled with both confusion and panic.
"You died. And now you're in limbo," the female spoke, moving elegantly forward until she knelt before him. From here, he noticed the wings that almost erupted from her back. "And now you have a choice, my sweet child. Remain here and rest, or go back."
Takemichi stared at the girl, trying to wrap his head around this news. So Manjiro had killed him. And he was being given an option that he wished for constantly over his time-leaping journey. But does he take it?
"But before you make your decision, I will allow you to see what is happening currently on Earth," and with that, the girl stood and waved her arm. An opening that resembled a mirror or puddle appeared out of the air. Takemichi lifted himself to stand and look through, the rest of the people there were also crowding around to look. After all, they were never given this choice and this was all new to them.
-back at the battlefield-
Senju bowed towards Manjiro Sano, begging for an end to the battle, unaware that it was too late to save her friend. She simply wanted to end the conflict and return to easier times at this point.
Manjiro simply stared at her before dropping the body and heading towards his bike, not even sparing a glance towards his old friend. After all, there was no point. Takemichi had made the wrong choice in coming back to save him, and he had proved that. His work was over.
The scene changed to show Kokonoi dragging the body of Takemichi towards D&D Motors where his old friend would be. Kokonoi knew that the body of his ex-commander was cold but maybe if he could reach Inui, then Takemichi could be fixed. What other choice did he have?
Inui, in a panic, bundled Takemichi's body into the vehicle and drove to the nearest hospital, praying that it wasn't too late. He couldn't lose two people tonight. Koko had returned to the Kanto Manji headquarters, silently hoping that he had made it in time.
-limbo-
"I didn't think he would kill you," Baji thought aloud, his eyes wide in disbelief. When he was alive, he could see just how much Mikey had treasured his friendship with the younger. Draken and Emma shared that sentiment while Shinichiro was simply disappointed. The boy they had just watched was not his brother, at least not the one he remembered.
"So, my dear Takemichi Hanagaki, what will your choice be?"
"I… I don't know…" the boy answered, his heart and head hurting. He couldn't believe that he died, let alone that it was at the hands of someone he so desperately wanted to save.
"I can give you some time to decide. But only for 3 days. If you haven't made a decision then, you will remain in limbo forever," the girl explained, her eyes sad. She didn't want to damn a soul to this, but her rules were clear. Help the souls in limbo move on in one way or another.
Takemichi was conflicted.
Sure, he had wanted to simply take a break and leave the saving people to someone else. He was tired of all the failures, all the futures where something went wrong. Maybe he could simply tell the angel that he wanted to pass on, and end the cycle of failing.
"Takemitchy."
Draken was standing next to the boy he had come to love in his own way. He gave his life to save Takemichi, something he never regretted. Draken was happy now, reunited with his true love for the rest of time. The tall boy made the right choice.
"You know, you had a great future," Takemichi started. "You and Inui worked in your motorbike shop, and everything seemed perfect…" his voice trailed off at the end, tears welling up in the signature blue orbs.
"But was I truly happy?" Draken asked, his hand falling onto the shorter's shoulder. "Without Emma, I doubt I was." And he had a point. Future Draken didn't have a partner, his heart still belonging to the dead girl. Could he have truly been happy without her? Takemichi felt a little better when he heard that. Although it was too soon for him to leave the world, maybe he could be truly happy now.
"I guess not…"
"Oi! Takemitchy!" Baji appeared in front of the blond. It was the first day of the three and he was still trying to come to a decision. "You still not going back yet?"
Takemichi looked at the other incredulously. He made it sound so easy to just go back there. The boy he had failed to save due to not remembering an important detail. Due to his mistake, Kazutora had stabbed him and forced him to take his own life. It was his fault.
"So I can fail yet again? Just like how I failed you?" Takemichi muttered, his eyes darting away from the sharp gaze Baji was giving him. "You know, your death almost destroyed Chifuyu and Mikey."
"And yet you were there to help them," the brunet grinned. "So when are you going to tell Y/N you're heading back? You only have two days after all."
"Y/N?"
"Yeah. The angel that is constantly around Shinichiro. She is the angel that protects the dead," Keisuke explained, pointing his finger towards the girl. All of them had remained in limbo until Takemichi made a decision, just hanging out in the white void. "So should I tell her you're going back or what?"
Takemichi shook his head, moving his gaze back towards the opening. Maybe he could see what was happening and that would help.
-back on Earth-
Takemichi's broken body lay on a hospital bed. Wires and bandages decorated it, the only indication that he hadn't moved on being the weak beeps from the heart monitor. So he wasn't fully dead, he thought.
Hina was constantly in and out of the room, bringing new flowers to fill the vase next to his bed. She looked heartbroken every time her eyes fell on the bed. Maybe if she had been there, she could have prevented this outcome. After all, she had vowed to protect Takemichi and yet he was teetering between life and death.
"Any developments, Tachibana?" Inui asked, entering the hospital room. He was also a regular visitor, appearing more than once over the last day. He was worried for his commander.
Elsewhere, in the Kanto Manji headquarters, Koko was keeping tabs on Takemichi through his hospital records. From what he could see, the boy was pretty much brain-dead but his essential bodily functions continued to work.
Manjiro had calmed from his dark impulses, his mind fuzzy over what had happened during the Battle of the Three Deities. He had no recollection of almost killing Takemichi, nor accepting Rokuhara under his gang. In fact, it seemed that one moment he saw Draken's lifeless body being taken away, and the next his gang had grown significantly.
"Did you see what happened to Hanagaki during the fight?" Manjiro asked, looking towards his executives with a main focus on Kokonoi. After all, he was closest to the blond besides himself.
"You don't remember?" Manjiro shook his head. "He's currently on life support in hospital."
That confused Manjiro as he was sure Takemichi remained on the sidelines. Who beat him so badly that he was hospitalised?
-limbo-
"Shinichiro?" Takemichi approached the taller man. He had a question that he needed answering and only he could provide an answer.
Shinichiro turned and smiled at the boy. "What's up?"
"Manjiro mentioned something about dark impulses. Did he have them when you were alive?"
The man simply sighed, averting his gaze from the boy's face towards the white ground. "There was the incident with Haruchiyo…but I didn't expect it to get this bad," he answered, remembering the incident of how Sanzu got his scars. Why the boy still followed Manjiro around after that confused Shinichiro. "But from where these dark impulses, as you call it, came from. I don't know." The Sano man deflated, almost disappointed in himself for not doing enough when he was alive. In his mind, if he had done more, then none of this would have happened.
"That's OK," Takemichi reassured him, deciding not to badger him for details on the Sanzu incident. "Thank you for telling me."
The next day was spent hanging around his friends. His mind was made up. There was so much he had left to do, so maybe taking that day as a rest would help his motivation.
"Are you ready, Takemichi?" Y/N asked, her wings stretching behind her back. It would be a long journey back and she hadn't had the need to in a while. But she was happy that the blond had made a decision he could stand behind.
"I am. Thank you, all of you," the crybaby spoke, tears gathering in his eyes as he took the angel's hand. "I will see you again, just hopefully not too soon." And with that, the pair started towards the hospital while the rest of them faded into a bright light.
Hanagaki smiled at the girl once they reached his body. Hina had fallen asleep in the chair beside the bed, her hand holding the boy's gently. Almost as if she was worried of hurting him. With a soft smile, Y/N let go off his hand to allow him back into his body. The heart monitor seemed to beep a little louder and some colour returned to the body's skin.
Takemichi felt the pain first. Everything ached from the injuries he endured. But with his first bit of energy, he moved the hand on his girlfriend's own. If only he could stop time and stay like this forever. However, tomorrow would bring Chifuyu and reality would set in again.
