So the Steam WInter Sale is on and i picked up a bunch of games fairly cheap, including The Beginner’s Guide, a game by creator of the Stanley Parable. It’s another narrative based game with fairly simple gameplay mechanics, and since I liked The Stanley Parable so much and it was only $6 I figured I’d give it a go.
The basic story is this: Davey Wreden, creator of this game and the Stanley Parable, is telling us the story of a friend he had between the years of 2008 and 2011 and how this friend started and stopped making games, through the medium of the games that friend made. He guides you through each game, explaining in equal parts the story and what each of these games means to him, and what he thinks they mean to his friend who made them.
This game is both similar and completely different to it’s spiritual predecessor. Once again it tackles our mindset regarding video games, but rather than using comedy to tackle the concept of our autonomy in video games, it’s a fairly serious and occasionally unnerving look at the way we treat games and their creators. As we play, we slowly start asking ourselves questions; do games have to mean something? are games made to be consumed? who do games really belong to? By the end of the game you will be seriously asking yourself whether you should be reading into the game or not. Davey Wreden is, as creator and narrator, our guide, and at different times you will find yourself relating to and disgusted by the character he has created for himself.
I genuinely have no idea what this game wants from me, if it wants anything at all, and I think that might be part of the point. If you have a few hours and $6 to spare I’d definitely suggest giving it a look.
So I have a pretty contentious relationship with the idea of “girl games” like the Imagine series that I’d love to go into on a different post, but the TL;DR version is that I think it shouldn’t be a genre at all, and am really loathe to mention them or suggest them to anybody just because of how heavily steeped they are in enforcing gender roles and the negative opinions people hold on them (of them as lesser games or not even games at all). I’m not a fan of them. Or more particularly, not a fan of the idea of them.
That said, I can’t stop playing Style Boutique.
Hey guys! I was seriously super pumped for Fallout 4 and bought just about every special edition I could to get my hands on as much new Fallout stuff as possible, which means I have a bunch of copies of the game. So I thought it’d be fun to give one of them away!
So lets get all this out of the way.
What you’ll win:
One copy of Fallout 4 for PC (sorry, but I’m not giving away any copies for PS4 or XBO at the moment. Also, you’ll need an internet connection and a Steam account to activate the PC version, keep that in mind!)
Some Nuka Cola Caps from me :)
Rules:
You must be following me (twomoonsdance)
To enter, reblog this post! For an extra entry, add a comment describing what you’re most looking forward to in Fallout 4, or your favourite Fallout memory so far. (I seriously need to talk about Fallout guys I love it a lot)
Only reblogs (and optionally comments) count as entries, but you’re free to like this post if you want. *-*
A winner will be chosen two weeks from now on 30th November. Please keep your ask box open so I can contact you, and you must be willing to supply me with a postal address to ship your prize to. If I can’t get in contact with you within a week, you automatically forfeit your win and I pick another winner. ;)
If you already own the game, please spread this around so that maybe someone who can’t afford their own copy can have a chance to win this one.
Many thanks, and good luck!
I'm quite proud of Assassins Creed Syndicate for evenly splitting their demos with a stealth demo for Evie and a brawling demo with Jacob
Cosplay done :p I'd love to get some photos with other cosplayers at EB Expo, so if you're going to be there you should totally say hi if you see me! (Because of my flight I'll miss most of Friday, but I'll be around all day Saturday and Sunday :D )
More WIP of the Fallout cosplay (look, I’m very excited.)
EB Expo is something like 4 days away and I’m desperately hoping to have this somewhere near an acceptable level so I can take it with me. It’s actually starting to look like a full costume now that the shoulder piece/belt is coming together, and I managed to salvage the knee pad I thought I’d have to drop. The Pip-boy buttons definitely need fixing, and there’s a lot of stuff I need to add and fix, but I’m very proud of what I’ve got so far.
