One might assume that H. P. Lovecraft's proclamation " I am Providence." was stated with a certain measure of bravado? Actually Lovecraft often referred to himself as, "A non-entity", in letters to friends. Whatever arrogance may have existed in the man died when his marriage failed. Providence was a part of his very identity, the place of his lost but ever treasured childhood. With the death of his parents and grandfather, the loss of his home at 454 Angell Street, the disappearance of his beloved cat, and the numerous rejections by any legitimate major publishing house of his fiction, his failure to graduate high school or attend college, Lovecraft was left with little else but memories. There were his aunts of course, but they were facing the same financial ruin as he. Providence the city, was his only link to anything meaningful. There were the streets he had explored as a boy, the architecture of the city he loved, the accents of the strangers passing by as he climbed the steep sidewalks of College Hill. HPL was the last of the Lovecraft's in America-possibly in the world? In his own time, as his letters to friends attest, he truely felt like a failure, a non-entity. Surely in life he could not have guessed that one day his name would ever be so revered and reviled too as it is today! (Exhibit 222)
