Wes looked back at his reflection in the mirror framed in a gold design that touched the ceiling down to the marbled floor. On either side, the room was further decorated with beautiful antique vases on stands nearly as tall as himself. In the reflection above him was a chandelier, a Victorian Medallion-back sofa, and perhaps the most brilliant view of all, was the Eiffel tower just outside their balcony window, caught in the corner of the mirror.
Wes was still bewildered that a life-long dream had come true for him, and he was in Paris. He had grown up hearing the stories his mother would tell of her family, leaving their farmhouse to visit the city. Wes had always dreamt of seeing both, and now he was going to. Thanks to Liza, the couple would be staying the week in France, sight-seeing the city before hopping on a train to visit his grandparents.
As hazel eyes traveled down his reflection, and over the dress shoes, black slacks, and long-sleeve shirt he had neatly tucked into his waist band, he wondered if one day he would finally wake up from this exotic dream. This life Wes had been building for years felt too good to be true, and he often feared one day he'd wake up back in Salem, in that rickety house he grew up in with his parents, a stark contrast to the apartment he and Liza were staying in now. Although, Wes had never had dreams as sweet as this, his were all riddled with terrifying pieces of his past, so he felt it was safe to say this was reality. And if he was dreaming, he wished to stay comatose.
Deciding he liked the way he looked for Liza, he once again pulled the pink velvet heart-shaped ring box out of his pocket. He'd checked on it about a thousand times since they left their home in Seabrook, as though to make sure it wasn't lost or damaged. That night was the night. The night he would be proposing to Liza again, and although he knew she would say yes, he couldn't help but feel a twist of nerves in his stomach. He wanted it to be special, something she had dreamt of her whole life, not him blurting the words out like they meant nothing.
The lid of the little box came off with ease, and Wes stared down at the ring he'd so carefully picked out for his wife. Wes wanted the night to be perfect, especially with them celebrating Liza's birthday over dinner. All he wanted was to give Liza every good thing she deserved, but all he could do was hope this was enough for her.
Hearing Liza in the next room, he quickly replaced the lid and slipped the box back into his pocket before she could see it.
"All ready?"
