We’re all different centers..
Not every agency handles all 911 calls or non-emergency calls or even both at the same time. Sometimes you’ll have an agency that takes care of all calls for that area, sometimes you’ll have an agency that handles only police related calls and passes fire calls off to the surrounding agency.
So if you call 911 or non-emergency and get transferred, don’t be upset. There’s usually a legit reason. We aren’t transferring you because we don’t want to help.
Not all call takers are police officers, but some are. Just like not all call takers dispatch at the same time, but some do. If your local agency is big enough, you have people trained in different skills that handle only what they’re doing at that moment. If you’re in a more dense populated area, your call takers are possibly also dispatching the units out to help you. So if they ask you to hold on a moment, one of their units may be trying to reach them over the radio. They’re not blowing you off.
Each agency in each county, state, town is different. But we all have the same goal: to help the public and to take care of our officers and firefighters/EMS.
