Hi Dr Ferox! I just wanted to thank you for your insistence that people check with their vets about weird behavior changes in their animals: it's super reassuring for me when I have questions about my own cat. And recently, I managed to convince my parents to bring their old cat to their vet because he was drinking too much and throwing it up after a few minutes, and they didn't think it was concerning. Turns out he had hyperthyroidism! But now they are treating it, and he'll be fine...

You’re welcome. If I could just teach people one thing, it would be to call their vet with concerns rather than relying on the internet.

Your kitty will be much better off being treated for his hyperthyroidism, well done on getting him in to be checked.

Okay but it literally means “the penis”???

(I realize now that this might sound aggressive but it's not, I'm just very baffled)

I wish it was that interesting but actually it’s because it’s surrounded by a pine forest. Like, it’s a pretty big deal--the La Pine National Forest is over 2,300 square acres large. It has the world’s largest ponderosa pine in it.  (The tree is named Big Red and it’s more than 500 years old, nearly 29 feet around and 162 feet tall.)

Well fuck I just convinced myself to go to La Pine this summer so I can see Big Red I hate that I’m a sucker for giant trees kill me

Is this French? It looks like French. Why would anyone who speak French call their town "La Pine" if they don't hate it?

Can’t say! To my knowledge it was supposed to be a metropolitan area except Bend became that instead.

Urgh, welcome to true Parisian life, at least! I hope you don't have to use the SNCF-managed parts of the RER, the strike is justified but it does make moving around miserable...

Yeah, I’m kind of used to it, but my daughter was Not Happy.  She got kind of scared b/c the crowd got loud and pushy and since the announcements were, of course, in French, we had no clue what was happening or what we were supposed to do.  Which meant we ended up taking an Uber back to DLRP, but that might have been the best money I’ve spent this trip b/c I don’t think either of us could’ve gotten back on another train at that point.  Ah, Paris.
