Or just… over-analyzing villagers.

the NEXT villager i want to yap about is keaton!

if you don't know who keaton is, this is him

first off, what we know and what we can learn.

okay before the analysis and stuff lets start with some useless information about him! he has the music hobby and his 'goal' is to be a musician. he likes tropical stuff, like beaches and the sea and stuff. he likes pure black blend coffee. he's the fifth of 6 kids, and he's good at tongue twisters!

okay now analysis

im actually gonna START with his pocket camp description this time - "He's quite the fashion maven. It helps that if he's not feeling a particular look, he can get by on his dazzling plumage alone." - revealing that he's canonically 'attractive'. implying people see his looks. "get by" means to manage, to survive. keaton "gets by" with his looks. this reveals he uses his conventionally attractive looks to his advantage—he's a charmer.

but what does HE think about this? is his charm accidental? is it intentional? well, we might get to know this too.

first off, keaton is a smug villager. smug villagers are characterized as egotistical and/or self-centered. even nookipedia states "Smug villagers are portrayed as arrogant and egotistical, acting sophisticated and thinking highly of themselves." and they "commonly act arrogant, boastful, and egotistical" - so it's pretty obvious that in keaton's case, he is most likely aware of his charm. he definitely sees himself in a good light, maybe TOO good.

his favorite saying is "Even in a room full of fools, someone is the smartest.". this saying signifies a hierarchy of intellect. someone will always be the 'smartest' one in a room of 'fools'. obviously. but this could also mean something strategically - the 'wise man playing the fool', if you will - someone might feign idiocy or unawareness while actually outsmarting everyone else in the room. tying this in with our already known information about keaton, it's safe to assume he knows EXACTLY what he's doing. he feigns being a 'fool' to charm his way through his life. with his looks, he makes sure everything is in his favor. and it's pretty clearly shown that it WORKS - he appears at least moderately wealthy. and this also reveals / confirms that he sees himself above everyone else. this and his smug personality really imply the fact that keaton, being as 'charming' as he is, sees everyone else as below him. 'fools'. easy to trick. i have reason to believe all this information suggests keaton has a superiority complex.

"bbbbbbut that saying could just be that first reason you said!!!" okay well i present to you: his spanish name, Lucho. nookipedia defines this name as "Affectionate diminutive of the masculine given name Luis, and from aguilucho (Spanish for harrier)". a harrier is a bird of prey. and a bird of prey is described as a keen bird that feeds and hunts its opponents.

keaton is a playboy.

now, theories. or just yaps that aren't confirmed or implied, i guess.

what led keaton to think this way? how did he realize how he could utilize his looks?

someone utilizing charm to their advantage would lead to them getting used to charming. maybe this started with a few little instances, and then became a habit. maybe he was raised like that. maybe his mindset is that THIS is how to live and if you don't live like this you're FAILING because this is FUN AS HELL

but also, i don’t think keaton is like awful evil manipulative grrr bad. refer back to nookipedia’s smug description, and you’ll see “Beneath the surface, however, they are kind-hearted villagers that act very polite, sometimes gentlemanly, and may flirt with female villagers and the player, regardless of gender, when befriended.”. being charming to get by doesn’t necessarily mean put up a cartoony rizzler facade. what i personally think is keaton DOES have a superiority complex, and he can and does charm, however coming WITH that charm is, as described, ‘gentlemanly politeness’—his true, good side maybe? also, when putting up the charm, how many GENUINE connections has he made that weren’t just for his benefit? does he want to make connections? does he accidentally make connections with people and end up being confused but liking it and feeling what it feels to have a friend that doesn’t only see him for his looks? maybe he makes genuine connections on the town / island in-game and shows more of his good side? after all, THIS segment of the analyses i make are all up to interpretation. the games gave us information, and then it is up to us to decide how we want to characterize these villagers further. so take everything i say in this section as theory and possibility and interpretation for what kind of character keaton may be. the info we get from games is enough to hint at it, but not enough to know for sure.

anyways TL;DR keaton is cool as fuck /silly

i like researching and learning about animal crossing villagers. like. little tidbits about them, little hints to their personality, little hints of LORE. so i decided i want to start a series where i analyze a random villager and lowkenuinely cook up a whole ass essay explaining their lore AND possible theories,,,, even though you can look at their nookipedia pages i think a lot of people gloss over that

first villager i want to yap about - out of pure bias - renée!!

okay. let me explain why i love her

first off, what we know and what we can learn.

with renee, you could basically tell something happened in her past. her favorite saying, for example - "Reckless youth makes rueful age."

reckless youth makes rueful age means that if you're irresponsible, thoughtless, and yknow, 'reckless' in your youth, that shit's gonna have consequences. if you smoke, your lungs are gonna be damaged. if you pick fights with people, you're gonna run into the wrong person eventually, reckless youth makes rueful age.

this already stems a question - did renee have a reckless youth?

short answer: yes.

long answer: WE can lore it up. her happy home prompts reveal that she 'used to hang in empty lots'.

“I want to relive the days I spent playing in a vacant lot." and "I miss the time I spent hanging out in empty lots..." HHD and HHP prompts.

renee used to hang in lots - a thing that's common for people with 'reckless youths'. i wonder what she did or what she talked about.

yeah so pocket camp just straight up TELLS us.

"She ran with a bad herd in her younger days but later said rhi-NO to delinquency and shaped up into the dependable woman you see before you now."

it even says the word "delinquency".

renee was in some sort of delinquent group. a gang, even?

now, theories.

first of all, i want to talk about the drastic change from her new leaf house to her new horizons house.

here is her new leaf house. vvv

this interior shows, well, an empty lot-esque house. it kind of reflects her past, in a way. this was the type of place she’d hang in back then. this was what she preferred. this was her environment.

now, HERE is her new horizons house. vvv

it looks a lot more like a house. she completely changed styles. i interpret this as how she is NOW. she’s found herself. this is her environment now. she still has that edge in her, but she’s fixed herself. she even has the DJ set awwwe yes blast your tunes 🥹🥹🥹

now, even MORE yap!

youth is consistently mentioned across her profile, leading me to believe she was a JUVENILE delinquent - these guys are known for vandalism, theft, and truancy (skipping school). renee most likely followed a bad crowd, maybe around high school or college? her 'playing in empty lots' symbolizes the freedom she felt, but she was with a 'bad herd'. her favorite saying shows she regrets it, but she also misses it. she misses the very thing she regrets. she doesn't want to act like that again, as she already realized it has consequences and yknow its bad, but she misses the freedom. her prompt went from "playing in an empty lot" to "hanging in empty lots". playing in empty lots is a common connotation for something a child would do. HANGING in empty lots is a common connotation for something a delinquent would do. this could have a double meaning, and knowing renee's past now, it seems pretty damn symbolizing.

another thing to note - her sisterly personality. she "shaped up into a dependable woman", right? yes. she shaped up into a better person. she acts sisterly now. maybe she wants to care for people like a sister so they won't go down the same path she did, or maybe she herself never felt that affection. a common causation for juvenile delinquency is parental background.

but that part is just a theory. we've got the basics, now it's up to simple speculation.

we can only suspect what led renee to that path, and what got her out of it.
