I dont actually remember when or why i developed it as a headcanon but ever since i was a kid i always just assumed that lightsabers didn't have an external on/off switch and that to turn it on you had to use the force to affect the mechanism internally. And that the reason every Jedi had to make their own unique lightsaber wasnt just as a right of passage, but it would mean you can't use one without an adequate level of force control, and because they would need to know their own lightsaber inside and out, with the added bonus of making it nearly impossible to use a stolen lightsaber. Plus why they always turn off the moment someone drops one but stay on during throw attacks. The fact that they just have some big chunky button on the side was always disappointing to me.
