Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns launches August 13 - Gematsu
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG on August 13, publisher Nordcurrent Labs and developer Black Tower Basement announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via Nordcurrent Labs:
The remake will include three modes: Retro Mode, Classic Mode, and Kingdom Mode. Retro Mode allows players to experience the original Amiga version of the game, Classic Mode serves as a modern reimagining with a new visual identity and smoother mechanics. Kingdom Mode is a roguelite deck-builder with dice-based combat set in the world of Defender of the Crown. To unite the kingdom, players must fight across the map and defeat three enemy lords in their strongholds while facing brigands, rogues, and Norman forces along the way.
Battles combine tactical deck-building with dice-driven combat: your army units determine the starting dice and score, while tactic cards are played turn by turn to gain the advantage. As the campaign progresses, new dice types, relics, and mechanics make encounters increasingly strategic. During each run, players can explore points of interest, join tournaments, rescue Saxon ladies, raid for gold, or besiege castles to weaken enemy armies. While the regions themselves remain fixed, events and encounters are randomized for every playthrough.

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns announced for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC - Gematsu
Publisher Nordcurrent Labs and developer Black Tower Basement has announced Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns. It will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG in 2026.
Here is an overview of the game, via Nordcurrent Labs:
The beloved 1986 strategy experience is coming back, and will include three modes: Retro Mode, Classic Mode, and Kingdom Mode. An Amiga hallmark, Defender of the Crown has been rebuilt to bring the Saxon-Norman conflict to a new audience with modernized visuals, refined mechanics, and an ambitious expansion of its classic formula.
England is a land of chaos where the crown has been stolen, and the King is dead. Players must step into the boots of a Saxon lord to outmaneuver rival Normans, raise armies, and reclaim the throne. This remake preserves the design of the original, while updating the experience with cleaner systems and meaningful quality-of-life enhancements.
Players compete for control through a strategic world map, managing territories and engaging in diplomacy with legendary figures like Robin Hood. The experience is heightened by cinematic events, including castle sieges, jousting tournaments, and raids, all presented through unique visuals that blend 2.5D environments with dynamic lighting and high-fidelity pixel art.
To cater to every type of strategist, the game offers three distinct ways to play. Retro Mode provides a love letter to the 1986 original, featuring near-perfect authenticity with modern stability. Classic Mode serves as a modern reimagining with a new visual identity and smoother mechanics. Finally, the brand-new Kingdom Mode introduces a dice-driven roguelike adventure where players build tactical decks and manipulate rolls to shape the outcome of procedurally generated campaigns.
