My fav theory is that Max and Steph might have been friends/friendly at some point (both popular, he obivously doesn't bully her and she's basically unaware he's a bully at first). Thembonding over their shitty dads, hanging out, and then one day he dies and she just has to pretend to be okay with it

I like to think that they used to be close (childhood friends, perhaps?) And they had a much more sibling like relationship.
But as time passed, Max's behavior got worse, Steph's dad is more of a dick, they started falling out.
And then that whole thing with Max beating up Peter was like the icing on the cake for their friendship deteriorating.
