Sunset on the lake has always been a favorite time for me. Things get peaceful. You can just hear the waves and the rocking of the boat. When I was a kid it signaled the end of boating and I would curl up in/on a pile of beach towels under the dash on the passengers side of the boat and feel very warm and safe. Evenings end on the lake. Take the boat out. Wipe it down. Hook it up. Enjoy the stillness. Reflect on your time on the water. Settle into the warm dry pickup cab with that perfect, tired, “after lake” feeling that can only come from swimming and boating. Sunday evening. Floating in the middle of Lake Sakakawea. Totally still. Until we float within hearing distance of a fishing boat. (I had stopped filming at this point.) Sound carries on the water. And what did we hear? This. Bay. This. Inlet. We have history. This is where my parents most often went on lake days, which were plentiful when I was growing up in Garrison ND - just near the lake. There’s a half sunken pasture fence at the end of the inlet. That’s how you know it’s the right one. That, and its particular beauty and glassy water. The water is also never cold - perfect temp. We found this inlet again last Sunday, our first time in years on Sakakawea. We stopped. Swam. Had snacks. Enjoyed the peace. I may have panicked a bit when a snake slithered past me on the water (although I love them it’s creepy in the water to see them.) It was incredibly healing to be back. We reminisced about good times here when I was a kid - times with friends and their boats and picnics. Lovely. And husband really fell for the lake here. Overall, just a wonderful place to stumble upon.
