Our 2022 art exhibit “Fine Feathers: at play with structure and function” is on display until October 31. This sketch of a Northern Hawk Owl is from a page in Anne Callahan’s sketchbook. Anne says she enjoyed the simplicity of drawing with pencil in her sketchbooks over the past few years. She studied and drew birds as a form of art therapy in the hours, days, and months at home during the pandemic. This little owl is her favorite sketch to date. Northern Hawk Owls are found in the boreal forest, but occasionally come to Vermont in the winter. They are between 14 and 17 inches, yet only weigh somewhere between a half to 1 pound. Northern hawk owl. Taken in Manitoba just outside riding mountain provincial park. My steps in the grassy field was causing the explosive vole population to literally jump through holes in the snow. This stunning owl came in quickly and hovered over the area just long enough to shutter off several images.
