a nice symphonic poem containing a very tasty main theme 5:25
This piece (by Noskowski) was supposed to be an overture for the opera Ogniem i Mieczem (With the Fire and Sword) based on Sienkiewicz’s historical novel. However, this opera has never been created, so the piece became a symphonic poem named “Step” (The Steppe) about war between Poles and Cossacks in XVII century, which is the main topic of the novel. In the piece, after five minutes of introduction, we can hear “Polish theme” with polonaise rhythm and trio. We can also hear interesting imitations, for example: the flutter of Hussar wings or hoofbeats. In “Cossacks theme” we can hear imitation of teorban played by orchestra with pizzicato, harp and percussion. In development, two themes are mixed up - that’s imitation of war. This themes present us two opposite sides in breathtaking way. It is a wonderful, delightful piece. Get comfortable, close your eyes and use your imagination to see the victory of Polish Hussars while listening.
