#nostalgia filter

Much as I hate the glut of sequels and reboots, this actually is not a new problem. Here’s a list of the highest grossing movies in North America, adjusted for inflation.

Of this list, Gone With the Wind, The Ten Commandments, Jaws, The Exorcist, Doctor Zhivago, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Ben-Hur, and Jurassic Park were based on novels while The Sound of Music was based on a musical, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on a fairy tale, Avengers: Endgame off of a comic, Titanic and The Sting on history (albeit loosely), and The Lion King on a play.

 Four more of these movies are sequels and (all in one franchise, at that), so we’re left with two movies (Star Wars and E.T.) that were not based on a pre-existing IP and/or history and were not part of a franchise.  Also, two of the movies on this list (The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur) were remakes of earlier silent films.  

From the beginning of the film industry, adapting a novel or stage musical or play everyone already loves has been seen as a safer bet than an original screenplay and it’s worth noting that execs originally had little faith in the success of either Star Wars or E.T.

I have accused many of the people who hate the Prequels of essentially having Nostalgia Filters - they went in to the Theaters expecting the same experience they had when they first watched the OT, and of course, they didn’t get that, so they pan the PT for things that the OT did or with arguments that are just nonsensical.

But, to be fair, that could be, subconsciously, the same reason I hate the Sequel Trilogy. I think I can make a strong case as to why that isn’t true (TFA is ANH but with more special effects and a female lead, Snoke makes no sense, The First Order is unexplained, the entire plot falls apart under close examination, the whole Leia’s group is called the ‘Resistance’ even though the Republic exists and she’s a general for it and one of the people who massively helped refound the damn thing) but those, one could argue, could very well fall into the same category as the hate the Prequels get - a lot of post facto complaints that have root in the basic nostalgia filter that I have for the Prequels.

Like, I don’t think I have that filter, but then, that’s kind of the whole point of a Nostalgia Filter - they’re hard to notice.

On a related note, the hate-on some people had for Lucas after the Prequels, as if the OT were something that just rose fully formed out of the ether would any involvement from him is just... fascinating.

Getting drunk and watching one of the worst movies that I have in my personal library with my suffering roommate is one of the best things about adulthood. Suffer.

Musing on Death Note

Okay, so I haven't watched it since high school, so I'm not sure. I liked it back then but thinking about it with a more mature viewpoint, a thought came to me: Is Death Note actually really dumb? Like is it actually just a dumb string of contrived bs that I thought was this compelling psychological thriller because I was a teenager? I'm going to have to rewatch the series at some point to be sure but feel free to chime in anyone
