I wish there was a more accessible (and CORRECT) place/app/ability for me to learn languages. Duolingo isn't really reliable and even when I was in college we didn't learn shit properly (apparently formal Japanese that you learn is like...TOO formal in most cases with a very limited vocabulary...)

Folks, if you’re reading this, you’ve reached the end of our queue of drafted content. The long and short of it is that Offbeat Classes and Tabletop Gaming has reached the end of its tenure on tumblr.

A few quick housekeeping notes before we wrap things proper:

Submissions: Our inbox will stay open for anyone who may want to submit fan-written snippets, sourcebooks, fanart, or other content as their spirit moves them. As always, the askbox and fanmail remain closed to new requests, but we’ll happily curate and post any submitted content.

Twitterbot: If you’re sad that you won’t be getting your daily fix of Offbeat content, you may be happy to learn about a side project that a couple of us have been tinkering with! Over the past couple of weeks as these queued posts have gone out, Caro and Schazer have been working on creating a Twitterbot that outputs randomly-generated content what matches the vein of this here blog! You can find and follow the project over on Twitter at @OffbeatRPG.

This bot is one hundred percent automated, so it won’t have the same handcrafted puns and wordplay that our snippets have, but if you’re looking for some randomly-generated content to scratch that worldbuilding itch, you’re welcome to follow along.

Well, it’s been a while

If you’re reading this post on this blog, there’s a chance you may be wondering “hey, I forgot this blog existed, I wonder why it stopped updating” or “oh, those nerds, what are they up to now” or “what even is this blog and why did I bother to follow it in the first place”

The long and short of it is that the creative team behind this blog got busy with other projects. Life happens, folks move onto other things, and sometimes projects like these get left behind. Truth told, even if we wanted to restart this blog, we’d be hard-pressed to do so: without going into too much detail, the server that hosted our random generator bot and its corresponding dictionary shut down a while back. Without access to that server, it becomes drastically more difficult to generate content; we’d essentially be creating prompts from scratch. For all intents and purposes, we don’t have the inertia to restart this blog as a fulltime project.

However, we unearthed a handful of drafts that were in limbo—off the beaten path, if you will—and figured that the least we could do is let those last few posts see the light of day.

What this means for you, dear followers

This is not a revival of the blog; we’ll be going through our drafts and queueing up all of the old content that’s finished enough to be worth posting. We’ll release these posts, two a day, until we run out, at which point we will stop.

Some of these are just snippets we wrote offhand, and never got around to posting. Some of these posts are inbox requests from ages ago, which we will finally get around to fulfilling. At some point along the way, a bunch of our inbox got emptied out and we lost a number of asks; if you submitted an ask years ago and don’t see a response, there’s a chance it may have been eaten by tumblr’s algorithms, in which case, we’re sorry but there’s nothing we can do about it at this point.

The askbox will remain closed indefinitely. We will not be responding to any new requests for rolls sent in via submissions or fanmail.

Blogstate update (and 24-hour askbox warning)

Hey all, hope you’re as excited to see us back on your dash as we are to be back! After a bit of unanticipated downtime we’ve recuperated and are hoping to get back into the swing of producing more content for our supportive fans.

[Askbox reopening]

It’s the question on the forefront of everyone’s mind: when will we be reopening roll requests? We’ll open the askbox three times - ~24 hours from now at 7pm EST, then following at 3am EST and 11am EST. We’ll take somewhere in the ballpark of 20 messages each time (for around 60 total), to keep our workload manageable. This should hopefully give folks a chance who can’t make it to our prior fifteen-minute windows of availability!

[Types of requests]

NB: We do NOT take snippet+loot+quest+location requests once the askbox is closed - submissions/fanmail asking for such will be deleted. Skirmish/Sourcebook requests via fanmail are ok!

Class snippets: The quintessential offbeat class, swiftly summarised with three skills and a pithy sendoff.

Sourcebooks: An in-depth explanation of an existing class, how their skills break down, and their place in the world/an adventuring party.

Skirmishes: A blow-by-blow analysis of how two requested classes might square off, and who comes out on top.

Loot posts: Three descriptively-named artifacts and a short explanation of the powers each of them holds.

Locations: A randomly generated geographical feature, and three places worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood.

Quests: Three offbeat tasks for a hero to complete! They often, but don’t always, tie together into a campaign-friendly story.

Multi-part asks and special requests are welcome, provided they still give us wriggle room to stay offbeat.

“A spellcaster” “something sneaky” or “something to do with shadows” are all decent Snippet requests, “a sneaky spellcaster” is pushing it.

Referencing existing blog content is fine - if you received a Class roll from us previously, feel free to request for them a suitable Location, Quest or the like.

For new content, keep it to three moving parts at most - two Classes and a Quest, a Class fitting a specified theme and the Loot they equip are examples of what’s doable. A <setting-appropriate> adventuring party and all their equipment is too tall an order!

[Getting involved]

We’ve gotten some people asking whether there’s any way they can get involved. While we’re not currently looking to add people to the blog team, we love contributions from fans (it’s how most of the current team started out!)

Fanart, fan-made snippets and sourcebooks, and any other content you can think of are always welcome via our submitbox. You can also tag posts with #offbeat classes or #offbeat-classes, so we might find it and reblog it.
