you all may be thinking that this is an abnormal news issue, and I will have to agree. you see, the overseer has been, as much as I hate to say it, slowly dying. issue after issue has been only a handful of people writing at least two articles each, and while I deeply appreciate them and what they've done for the newspaper, the newspaper is a group thing, and I think we really just need more people. this being said! please, please, please, if you are interested in writing for the newspaper, drawing for the newspaper, anything, and are in the hchchchc discord, you are very welcome to join! no matter where the newspaper goes from here- I am so thankful for everyone who has helped, and thank you all for being along for the ride! Okay I need a full on analysis of the death of the romantic for london boy pleeease

your wish is my command dear stranger on the internet!! but first some background reading because katie wrote something fantastic about this and i just jumped on that train

essentially london boy is a satire of her anglophile dating life since 2012 AND a parody of her songwriting oeuvre. the first speaks for itself but the second is what i was talking about on that post. and what i mean by that is london boy is basically a massive piss take of her own approach to love (or her approach to writing about love, important distinction. not everything she writes is true). she's always talked about being a romantic, finding romance in little things, in gestures, in seasons, etc - she's romantic to the point of destructiveness ("please leave me stranded, it's so romantic"). but she takes this and runs with it in london boy, romanticising the most banal, boring, excruciating things like taking a cab in the rain, walking through camden market (an overpriced overcrowded nightmare), watching fucking rugby in the pubwe. like, it's a joke, regardless of whether this woman genuinely might enjoy these things, it's highly likely she's not actually done any of them because she's Taylor Swift. which isn't actually important at all, but ok right i've got another idea--- it's just another example of her being able to craft this romantic fiction of what she imagines this fictional love could actually be like if she wasn't Taylor Swift. like she romanticises the small things like kissing on the sidewalk and watching sports in a pub because she literally can't do any of it without being clobbered with cameras. of course she romanticises it but it's not helpful or constructive because it's so disconnected from her actual life. she doesn't get to live the london boy life, and THEN in the lakes she is literally lamenting this fact/desperately trying to find a way to live that quiet low key life.

tldr london boy is simultaneously the pinnacle of self-parody and also she's the lakes' mom
