The thing about Martyn

It's not even about Martyn himself but the way he impacted the story and the characters, especially Ren. Martyn doesn't even need to be in a story anymore if his absence is the point - DATD showed it very well. He already impacted the fandom so much, carved a space for his characters significance independent of 3L and LL - the same way Watcher!Grian is independent of EVO. If there is Ren, there is space for Martyn or Martyn's absence. If there is Watchers, there is space for Martyn or Martyn's absence. The tragedy of his character and his impact on the story and others are compelling enough and flexible enough to be able to be included in a wide range of scenarios, be they 3L dependent or not.

I would even dare say his absence has potential to be more compelling. Because while other characters get to go back to their mundanity and routine, he doesn't. And the others have No Idea. There is so much potential based on the sheer implications of what others will go through when they realise that this shared friend of a friend doesn't get a happy mundanity. He's stuck in somewhere terrible they can't get to and they have to deal with this Realisation and just. Keep going. It's a curse of it's own.
