So many missed parenting opportunities to bond with the kids
I've slowly been chipping away at drawing scenes from that imaginary Muppet retelling of the Princess Bride, figured it was about time to share what I've drawn on Tumblr!
So, we're familiar with those people who think that the life of hunter gatherers was totally peaceful and idyllic and the whole work of industry and civilization has just been to bring poverty and credit scores.
And we're familiar with people who think that medieval peasants worked vastly less than people today - not just that they spent a lot less time on regimented wage style labor, or had significant time off, or weren't typically the stereotype of dirt and misery that we have, but that they had a lot less work than the man of the 21th century who works 40 hours a week and then has most of his chores done by machines.
And we're familiar with people who think that before Robert Peel and/or antebellum slave patrols, nobody actually enforced laws.
Now I'm encountering people who think that before the "high nationalist" project (basically post-Napoleon) there was no territorialism at all and nobody would object to having large numbers of culturally different foreigners in their society. and that the strongly organized religion/feudal society that proceeded nationalism was amenable to anarchism.
As far as I can tell, these people truly believe that before the white Christian showed up to seize power the entire world was a happy multi-cultural gay and trans affirming commune with peace and happiness and health.
I am not sure if this is the scarier version
I was hanging out with a buddy today and he got to talking about marriage. Not only did he say a prenup was absolutely necessary but he went further to say not to put anything in her name at all. Don't put the house in her name. Don't put the car in her name. Separate cell phone bills. Separate bank accounts. She's expected to keep up with half of the expenses. All this so that if you get divorced she can't take everything you have.
I get the concern. Divorces suck and the courts tend to favor the women, but at that point why even bother getting married? I can't stand before God and promise to spend the rest of my life with her if I can't see her as more than a roommate with extra paperwork. We are supposed to be one.
If the marriage vows end with "I guess" instead of "I do" you're not right for each other.
You're friend sounds like he's a lot of fun at parties
Could always have a specifically religious marriage only, single on paper but married in the eyes of God.
Which is what you should tell him.
I have known several people who've done that, every single one of them has ended poorly.
Part of marriage is going all in to be one with your spouse. That means your whole life and all parts. Just like we are supposed to give our whole self to Christ. If you are holding back part of your life, just in case, perhaps you need to evaluate readiness to marry.
Also the civil side of marriage is important for various legal reasons and the, religious only marriage seems to generally only favor one person, generally the man
I don't know what kind of car to buy either and that is stressing me out. I actually can.. finally it's not a question of ability but oh no which one do I choose? That's why I'm talking so much.
The best advice I can give you is never get a German car.
Mechanics hate German cars. The Germans bolt every tiny little thing down and it's extremely annoying.
Those are literally my favorite cars... oh mein Gott.
As a German car owner, I find them alright. I'd probably sing a different tune if I wrote this in 2001 when the car was new since I'd be more meticulous about the repairs. At least two of the previous owners didn't do this car justice and it's falling on me
But it's 25 years old and has almost 180k miles on it. I've put in $1700 in repairs and I have another estimate for ~$1800. That's not factoring in the $1000 for the brakes. It feels like a money pit, but I've never owned a car before this one so idk. I've heard from quite a few people that Mercedes is the best on average when it comes to German cars but I'm still new to owning one, and I'm at least the 4th owner at that.
The specs are probably inaccurate bc she's old, but the advertised specs are a 4600lbs curb weight with a 0-60 in 8 seconds, 268 hp, and 14-15mpg. The low mpg paired with needing premium fuel only (ONLY) makes it kind of annoying to drive longer than an hour on a highway. But with a top speed of 112mph (allegedly) and a v8, she can get a little rowdy. The interior has heated leather seats and a 3rd row which I removed, which is nice.
I'd say get a German car only if you can either comfortably afford a couple thousand in repairs annually (some mercedes models like the C class may look cheaper used bc of depreciation, but the maintenance is notably high. But it's their sporty class, the E class is probably less demanding) or you enjoy working on cars in general.
If I could choose a car that suits my life at the moment, I'd pick a current year Toyota Corolla. But if I made an extra $10k a year, I'd pick a 2020 W222 lol (look them up, the interior is great)
Your information is fantastic! Mercedes is not something I can afford. I am looking at used cars less than 20k lol. Yeah 14 mpg is rough. My preferences are having a manual transmission and being 'big enough' so not another Chevy spark.. that thing is so tiny, and I always end up doing 'suv' activities. I need the room of an SUV or a decent sized hatchback.
Toyota and Honda.
Yea definitely a Toyota or Honda, generally rock solid reliability and affordable, I think Toyota is just a bit higher on reliability but that could be just me
I think the reason Toyotas are slightly higher on the reliability Quotient isn't because Toyota build an inherently better car, but because Toyotas attract a certain kind of autist.
I am not going to say I have a leather-bound notebook that I log every single maintenance item I do to my truck in, but I might have a leather-bound notebook that I log every single maintenance item I do to my truck in.
I kept all the tickets from every maintenance we did on the 2018 sienna. Aside from tires and brakes the only issue we had was water pump replacement at 140,000 miles. Got 10,000 trade in on it

A small price to pay for mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika
This tempts me to envy
That is a work of art and a fucking hardcore piece of engineering! Built to last.
There can be only one.
And that THICC monster of an appliance defeated them all.
Six burners, two ovens (at least), and a warming drawer at comfortable arm level? Bro, if you don't want that thing, I do. I'd rent a storage unit just to keep it safe until I had a house it would fit in.
Okay, so I did a little research.
This gorgeous piece of kitchen machinery is the Aristocrat Town and Country by an appliance company called O'Keefe and Merritt
DuckDuckGo. Privacy, Simplified.
This range appears to have been produced around 1949-ish (not totally confident on that year but it's five minutes of heart-eyes fueled googling, so take it for what that's worth) and has six burners, two ovens, two broilers, and a warming drawer. As anyone who laid eyes on it (except the OP apparently) could instantly see, these things are built to last the ages, and there are a number of used models available for purchase on eBay and Facebook Marketplace, with prices in the $10.5K-$12K range where the seller states that not only does everything work perfectly, but the chrome has only a minor ding here or slight wear there.
Bro, if I can ever afford one of these, I am gonna get it. This is a 75-year-old stove your great-grandchildren will still be able to use without any signs of major breakdown 100 years from now. I had no idea I could salivate over an oven, but my gosh.
My grandma had something similar. A cousin of a parent had something similar, which I actually got to see. WANT!
How the FUCK is it only Tuesday
Because yesterday was an extra long Monday. We apologize for the inconvenience and offer to shorten Thursday as compensation. No one understands Thursday anyway
thinking again about when the Christian writer and theologian Russell Moore was invited to meet Pope Francis:
With the death of Pope Francis this week, my thoughts went in many directions, but one of them was the memory of my humiliation at the front door of his house.
Invited by the pope to speak at the Vatican on an evangelical view of marriage and fidelity, I arrived in Rome jetlagged and exhausted, having just finished teaching at a Southern Baptist seminary on Martin Luther’s view of conscience.
Going through security at the Vatican, I handed the Swiss Guard what I thought was my passport, pulling it absentmindedly out of my pocket, from the same suit I had worn back home. After a moment or two of his puzzled expression, I realized that I had given him a pocket-sized copy of Luther’s 95 Theses.
An archbishop there with me said, “Just don’t nail it to the door and you should be fine.”
Shenzi and I just lost one of our cats. I'm still... i dunno, trying to believe it.
Please pray for us.
He was a stupid gluttonous jerk named Loki. And he was our friend and family. And I miss him already.
Rest easy little dude.
My condolences, but Loki? That face says pure angelic innocence, on the other hand, Loki would have that expression
He had his moments. He got real affectionate as soon as he noticed we were preparing food (whether it was meant for him or not), took naps on or next to us on the couch, and would hop on top of one of us at bedtime while purring like a chainsaw.
It's funny though, a lot of what I'll miss him for are his weird little quirks. Even the ones that annoyed or frustrated us. He was the biggest drama queen about getting his claws trimmed and would try to steal his sister's wet food after inhaling his own.
We have two cats and yeah they both have their quirks, and want them to be around for a long time

First Peoples
The first entry in my family Bible records a birth in Massachusetts in 1785.
We've been here a while.
Great-grandparents emigrated from Russia and Germany in the 1910's and 1920's, so as not to be murdered for the crime of being Jewish in Russia and Germany in the 1910's and 1920's.
My birth mother's family got to San Francisco in around 1910 I think for the same reason
I don't know who needs to hear this but when you're washing your hands it is helpful to open the faucet
Sounds like something big water says to sell more water. I hear they pack a ton of dihydrogen monoxide in that stuff so be careful
I wonder if it's possible to put a micro-yield nuclear warhead in a high velocity 40mm and be able to yeet it far enough to be at a safe distance when it detonates.
So, you'd need a nuclear material that went critical at miniscule masses. So probably not.
Sounds like you just need some antimatter. Currently priced at approx 1 trillion per gram I think
Ah yes- total conversion warheads.
Well, about the only other option is to go kinetic and get the velocity above 3km/s or 9800 ft/s. If you want near nuclear Levels of energy deposited
I think the amount of antimatter you’d need is actually pretty small.
No doubt, but the problem is capturing and storing it. Even a fairly moderate particle beam can produce miniscule amounts, it even occurs during lightning, but gathering and keeping it around is non-trivial. I think the LHC managed to get a record of a few hundred anti-hyrogen atoms in a multi-year experiment to test if it really does act like regular matter, just opposite charge /spin.
