the last time I could feel small and safe simultaneously.

I remember it clearly.

I’d spread out a blanket,

in that field I always took them to.

nothing else existed but them.

they were my solace in the storms that were my other relationships. They loved that former version of us. Not some imagined singlet, us. They cared. They cared when no one else did.

they listened, they listened when everyone else I loved shut their ears and laughed off the possibility of caring about my interests.

They did not make me feel like I had to talk to them constantly,

they did not make me feel pressured to endanger myself for them like the rest did.

They let me breathe. They were my oxygen.

So anyway,

we were curled up on that blanket,

underneath the cloudy summer sky,

laughing and talking.

I was held. I was listened to. I was safe. I was safe.

safety melted into a mental shift. The mental shift melted into being small.

They didn’t care that I was small.

They didn’t act as if it was a burden, or something sudden or unnatural.

They laughed and talked softer and gentler.

They held me.

They noticed but didn’t say anything until I did.

They held me and convinced me to rest until our time together was up and they had to go.

That day I ran gleefully through the outdoors, the red blanket we curled up under pinned around my neck like a cape.

I felt free.

safe.

loved.

supported.

soft.

and now I can only dream to feel that way again.

because a few months afterwards that life shattered,

and I don’t know if the glass shards of my heart can feel that love once more.

And I finally have an answer to the whole: "If you were a monster, what would you be?" question, and now I can undoubtedly say that I would love to be THE Thing.
