I’m not usually a book blog, but I’m trying to keep myself away from a reading slump so I thought I’d talk about the books I’ve read I’ve the past three and a bit weeks!

A Deadly Education: I just finished this, and I loved it! The first ‘dark magic school’ book I’ve really got on with, it was in equal measures hilarious and mildly horrifying. *Big* found family vibes, with a really unique setting and a flawed but very likeable main character 8.5/10

The Poppy War: described to me as ‘ATLA if Azula was the main character’. I’m still processing this, but I thought it was fantastic. I’m always a sucker for a fantasy world that isn’t just an alternate version of western Europe and this delivered. Martial arts, opium smoking teachers, shamans, found family and an increasingly unhinged female character. Check the trigger warnings before you read this one, there’s some very graphic violence 8/10

Ninth House: Also fantastic, it’s got the heaping of found family that all of Leigh’s books have, but it’s far darker and more adult than Grishaverse. Dark Academia with a compelling murder mystery esque plot and some very fun twists and turns 7.5/10

Dune: I read this before watching the film and was surprised by how much I loved it! The world feels real and rooted, and while it might feel overdone now after decades of Star Wars, this came first. Great critique of colonialism and white saviourism and the ecological messages are perhaps even more relevant today. 8/10

The Priory of the Orange Tree: I knew I was going to love this, I wasn’t prepared for how much! A unique magic system, dragons, found family, the gays (tm), it’s the perfect book for me. If you want a high fantasy book full to the brim with great and complex female characters this is the one for you. Ead and Sabran have my heart 9.5/10

A Darker Shade of Magic: this was my first Schwab, it won’t be my last! Brilliant world building with a really interesting magic system and packed with twists and turns that I adored. I also think that Lila and Nikolai Lantsov very much need to meet! I read this in one sitting on a train and I’ve already purchased the sequel. 9/10
