hi y'all, you know the drill. there's a huge event happening locally that causes hotel prices to skyrocket this time of year, so nat's rent is higher than normal. she also has to serve a day of jail time that will not just prevent her from working but significantly put her at risk for violence. we want to make sure she at least has a safe room to come back to.
right now she needs $338 minimum to make rent (and this doesn't take into account food, or transportation costs to work and to/from jail).

Our eldest son is still suicidal with dysphoria and we missed his second appointment at the trans clinic due to lack of money. We want to get back on track.

My dad worked in the ad industry for fifty years.
Commercial art is still art and commercial artists are still artists.
Yeah, most of it is schlock, but there's some great commercial art out there, some of which is beautiful and touching and worthy of being shared and appreciated. I watched the ad in the quoted post - it was very sweet, well-crafted, and the store it was advertising wasn't mentioned or even hinted at until the last frame.
Don't let anticapitalism turn you into too much of a cynic.
i really don't think i'm being too cynical about this. i think the problem is people aren't cynical enough about the ways in which the advertising industry has encroached on every corner of our lives.
i am well aware that commercial art is still art, and will freely admit that plenty of compelling works have been produced in that sphere. but I still don't ever want to see an advertisement that it would be physically possible for me to avoid and i think a work of art being produced for the sole purpose of being an advertisement for an unrelated product or service cheapens it. it's impossible for me to connect emotionally with a piece of work that i know is intended to play on my emotions for the purpose of building positive association with a brand and extracting money from me.
when i see what is clearly the work of skilled creatives being used for advertisement, it doesn't make me feel better about the concept of advertising. it makes me feel bad about how and where art is considered worth investing in in our society. i've known a lot of artists over my life and none of them ever dreamed of working in advertising, but being an artist only pays a living wage under very specific circumstances. i want those artists to be able to make a living producing works on their own terms, and i don't want to spend my leisure time on social media sites - or anywhere else! - watching advertisements. it's that simple.
