mason had undiagnosed adhd and was put into remedial classes where he made friends & fell in (unrequited) love with a boy named david. the first time he went to miriam beach was with david’s family, who would spend about two weeks there every summer. mason was bullied a lot and it didn’t really help that at the same time he was trying to repress a lot of stuff

charlie was a larger-than-life theater kid who came out as gay and trans in maybe sophomore or junior year of high school. his parents weren’t abusive but they didn’t really understand at all. charlie’s relationship with his family got increasingly strained until he graduated high school and promptly left new jersey in exasperation

shep had 3 brothers and one sister growing up. his sister was the youngest, and he was the second youngest. his sister was deaf and shep was probably the person who kept her company most of the time. he was really kind of nerdy and had trouble finding friends until he joined a christian youth group. he actually grew up to become a pastor but started to agree less and less with the church’s politics/his conservative local community

I did a quick Google search and while it could be because of a health problem, it might also be just because he’s overweight : / Plus there’s the fact his last vet checkup was maybe two months ago??? He occasionally snored before then and the vet didn’t report any sinus problems.
