The soil is an intelligent life creating mechanism. It created us. It sustains us. Sow as many different seeds as you can get, all at once, I dare you! Stand back and observe in awe for the rest of your life, but for it to continue, let the soil have half of the harvest. That is how easy it is to create more fertile soil. Sowing seeds, and harvesting only half. Both are a joy, everyone benefits. Year after year, each generation of plants will adapt and become stronger and more beautiful, more flavorful, more intense, healthier, richer.

Feeding time at the plot. The direct seeded annuals get regular compost and an annual blood and bone scatter, but the transplants and perennials get a liquid molasses feed on dry weather weeks. I use a rough 3 second pour of liquid molasses to a watering can, and that does about 8 plants or about 10 square meters. This carton (bottle? cannister? not sure) will do about 2 feeds for me, covering about 200 square meters each time.

Solarizing in front, new beds in back. This section is new this year. We just finished the expanded fence today. We also skimmed off the weeds with hoes and covered half with plastic, using the zapping effect of the sun to bake down the weed residue. On the back half, I felt seeding the corn was too urgent since I want to get a second succession in later this summer, so we simply smothered the weedbank with compost and planted into that. Hoping I don’t regret skipping the solarizarion there. Overwintered parsnips are taking up a little space, but will hopefully go to seed and leave room for the three sisters to sprawl soon. #solarize #notill #notillgardening #notillfarming
