“Did everyone know about it?” The young blonde asked, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.
“Did you know I was illegitimate?”

Talking to Robert could be either of two things. Utterly enjoyable and liberating. Or sadly exhausting and draining. Upon his engagement to Mary, he had decided to call a meeting with her father to ask for his permission. But the prospect of Cousin Cora’s child and the uncertainty of how they would proceed and how they would live should the child be that of a male. Robert had exhausted it all, tried to twist the notion that Matthew would still be entitled to something. However, there was nothing more that Matthew knew than the law of the entail. The process would not allow it. Generations of Granthams had seen to that at least. He was glad when the conversation ended and he was able to leave to find his fiancee.
When he saw her, he could not answer. Instead he collapsed into the space beside Mary and let his head rest upon her knee, closing his eyes for a long moment. “Exhausting, pointless. And we went around in circles at least three times,” He said, running his hand across his face and giving a sigh. “He gives his consent but he is adamant that perhaps we do not make any life-changing decisions until the baby is born. Which worries me to think that perhaps he may ask us to post-pone the wedding.”
He paused. “I assume because he does not want to spend all his sons inheritance. It is a cruel fate I think that women cannot inherit. Especially in this day in age.” He turned to look up at her. “I am exhausted my darling. I may just sleep here.”

Perhaps if it had been anyone other than Sir Carlisle, Sybil would have kept on her path and left Mary to battle, but even an outsider would be able to see that the man was draining her sister of life. It was that thought that swayed the youngest Crawley to change her direction and begin heading towards the couple, "I hear Papa is looking for you Sir Carlisle." Sybil piped up once she was close enough, smiling kindly at the man as she stopped beside her sister and watched as the man took his leave before turning her gaze back onto her elder sibling. “Honestly Mary, any one from a mile away could see the two of you are ill matched.”

He looked up at her as she moved around the garden and came to sit next to him as he watched the geese fly past. As Mary came to sit beside him, Matthew shuffled over and glanced at her for a long moment before deciding to speak. “There is a concert down in Ripon hall,” He said. “Honouring the dead from the war.” he tucked his hands together. “I know its unorthodox but i was rather hoping that you would join me. It’s small. Mostly friends and family and those veterans.”

“Be it as it may that my flattery knows no bounds it still rings TRUTH,” He told her simply as he glanced up from the pages of a file he had been reading. Though he would have much preferred to keep it at the office he had made the sacrifice to his own personal time to see that the case had the proper attention it needed. Putting it to one side, he knotted his fingers together. “And as for snide comments aside, you know as well as I do that you are carrying a BABY Mary, not a whale. And though both are mammals I’d be very worried if it were a whale.”

Matthew had not been sure why he made the impulsive move to do such a thing. But he supposed in all respects he had been fighting the urge not do say or do something all through supper. She had looked so beautiful tonight. No more so than usual but he couldn’t help feel almost privileged knowing he could sleep next to and kiss and hold this beauty. For tonight and every other night of his life. And so he had moved behind her almost instinctively. Unhooked the top of her dress and slid the zipper down one would say almost sensually before letting his lips touch the nape of her neck and move across her shoulders. With her slight encouragement, he kissed up against her neck and then under her ear. “I wasn’t planning to,” he murmured.

Matthew raised an eyebrow as she declared that she didn’t want to impose on him. He shook his head, almost confused at her behaviour. He had stayed at Downton many times before.and he couldn’t understand why she could not stay with him at his. After all, they WERE engaged. There would be no harm. So long as she stayed in the guest room he saw no reason against it. “I can have Molesley fetch you new clothes in the morning. I’m sure there will be no worry for it.”
He stopped and looked at her. “Unless you perhaps don’t want to?”
