“But it changes everything!” Marigold sobbed, her mama had explained all about her birth father and his death, and how her mother had shifted her about from foster family to foster family until it was convenient for Edith to have her with her.
“She tried to get rid of me, Aunt Mary… she tried to give me to strangers!”
“Sweetheart,” Mary sighed quietly and shook her head, rubbing her hands gently up and down Marigold’s arms to try and calm her. Part of her could understand her niece’s frustrations, especially with the way Edith had kept things from her. “Nothing important has changed– you are still our Marigold, and we all love you dearly. But your mama… Edith did all of that to try and help you. I know it may not seem like it, but it’s true. No matter what you may think, she only ever wanted the best for you.”
Deep down, Marigold knew that, but the wound was still too fresh at the moment.
“Please, Aunt Mary, don’t make me go home, I don’t know if I will ever be able to look at Mama or Papa in the eye after this... can’t I stay here with you? I promise I won’t be any trouble.”
