With Stephanie Stillo, Curator of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection Rare Book and Special Collections Division at The Library of Congress in Washington DC. The book in front of us is one of the only known copies of the Doctrina Cristiana from 1593. It's supposedly the first book printed in the so-called Philippines. It also has Sulat aka Baybayin in it. When the colonists arrived on our islands, they noted that most were literate. Class or gender didn't matter back then, they knew how to read and write. It was a strange feeling to be in the presence of an object that's responsible for many things I and many of you fight against. Hundred of years later, we're still seeing the result of book. A few years ago, I release a project based on this book. Look out for an updated version later this year. #books #bookstagram #philippines #culture #nottodaycolonizer #baybayin #kabuay (at The Library of Congress) https://www.instagram.com/p/CANrd3pjswg/?igshid=msjscibci2pa
