Pretty much! One of my coworkers came up to me this week and said “I was watching Chicago PD last night and they had people bringing in all kinds of research dossiers, and it was just like what you do! I told my husband and he had no idea we had someone like that!” 

Researchers don’t talk about it much because it’s a bit “Hi I creep for a living” and it’s hard to make people understand that it’s both beneficial and necessary. But it’s also hard to resist making the “I stalk the wealthy for a living” joke.

Today I researched a family we want to ask for more money than they’ve been giving us, and to make my case that they HAVE that money, I looked up the tuition of the school their children all attend. 

It’s a good thing I’m not an actual creep, is what I’m saying. When you get paid to do it eight hours a day, you really don’t want to creep anyone in your downtime.

If you speak english and german already, swedish is like, cousins to both of those languages so once you get over the first hump of like "why the fuck is sked pronounced that way???" the grammar and stuff is pretty approachable

I am also learning Russian because Geno. The alphabet is pretty easy to learn, and the words are pretty phonetic. Having the separate alphabet has actually been helpful for me to remember the words because I can't get them confused with English. 

 Also Geno mumbles like crazy, even in Russian, and I can barely make it out so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can see the logic in that re the alphabet, though not sure it would help me the same way, but I totally sympathise with feeling like you /should/ be able to understand someone if they would just STOP MUMBLING DAMNIT lol.  native speakers speaking too quickly to follow is always an issue :|

Does Dearborn’s name ever tend to get shortened to Dear? Perhaps when she is especially soft or sweet or dumb? I would be unable to resist.

Nah, when I shorten it, I shorten it to Deebs. (Or Deeble.) When either of them are being particularly endearing I call them Bab with the appropriate adjective (Sweet bab, handsome bab, dumb bab, etc).

Polk is actually quite clever in a very dumb way, if that makes sense. She’s good at getting into things and then just wreaking havoc, which usually involves getting herself covered in dust or falling off a high place or whatnot.

I read the loveliest fic when I was supposed to be sleeping this morning by @notyourlovesong called We Are the Time, We are the Famous. I’d avoided it because it was a Sid/Geno/Artemi Panarin poly fic and what do I know about Artemi Panarin?? But it was stupid to do that because it was beautiful and melancholy and sweet and just really really lovely. Highly recommend

I kind of desperately want the fic where Panarin is an actual child, given to Kane and Toews for reasons they don't understand- wouldn't he be better off with Crosby and Malkin? You know, the ones that already understand how to raise a Russian baby?- but then are the best parents, because of course they'd be. /unaskedforwishes

Yess they would totally be the best parents. Totally clueless about the minutiae, but with good instincts re: what kids like. And my god, Panarin must have been a cute kid, button nose, angel curls <3

I think this calls for de-aged fic, actually, rather than inexplicable baby acquisition. (And that takes Crosby/Malkin out of the equation because ew notp sorry guys.)

Maybe they try to make Anisimov take him at first, because, y’know, Russian speaker, surely that’d be best (why couldn’t this have happened before Tikhonov left gdi) but Arty just nopes away, so Kaner has to take him, being Panarin’s bff and all that. Jonny tries to get out of it: oh great, Kaner can take care of him, bye guys, but Kaner is like don’t you dare fucking leave him with him you asshole, I have no idea what to do with a baby.

So Jonny has to trail along home with them, at first in that slightly resentful new step-dad way, why is this baby taking up all my time with my bestie, my peekaboo, my friend-with-benefits, we always have sex after a game, what is this. But Panarin is adorable and loves Jonny’s attention even more than he loves Kaner’s and Jonny is secretly smitten within the hour. (I say secretly, but lbh he is not very subtle about it.)

Panarin is just delighted by everything, babbling away in Russian and looking so cute, and people stop Kaner in the street to compliment him on having such a pretty baby, wow he looks so much like you and Kaner’s just like uhh thanks? and Jonny is partly laughing his ass off and partly thinking holy shit Kaner’s babies would be so cute, I wanna have babies with Kaner, like, for real and having a mild crisis about that, because he didn’t realise he had real feelings, he thought they were just having lots of sex, because lbh Jonny is dumb.

Anyway, a few days of cute baby shenanigans ensue, as is typical with such tropes, then Panarin changes back, and is all bashful about it, thanks for looking after me *blush blush* and Kaner ruffles his hair like no problem kid and Jonny unceremoniously kicks the poor kid out because Kaner is so hot when he’s being competent with kids, and Jon needs to fuck Kaner rfn, but Kaner is like wow dude don’t be so harsh on the rookie, you’re such a terrible dad.

And that gives Jonny a second crisis, because he had been about to go all in and tell Kaner how much he loves him and that he wants them to have babies ever after and all that jazz, but now he’s thinking omg Kaner thinks I’m a bad dad, he must not want to have babies with me, I must have read everything wrong, this is terrible, because lbh Jonny is dumb. So when Kaner says come on, we haven’t had sex in days, having a kid in the house is a terrible cockblock, *dramatic hand to forehead* ravish me Jonathan, Jonny pulls away all babies are also bad for my sleep schedule I’m going home, and Kaner’s like ??? ok then.

Then there are a few days of awkward silence between the two of them, and Kaner is getting increasingly annoyed, which makes Jonny more annoyed, and Artemi just keeps looking between the two of them like ??? you were doing so well when you were co-parenting me, wtf happened, so there is obviously An Intervention, and then the dumbfucks get their act together and decide to have lots of babies together the end.

I think part of the problem re: criticism is that you (and John) are in an awkward position. White, male, heterosexual, middle class, etc. As people in the public eye with voices that are heard to many young people, you're almost expected to respond to every major thing with the Correct Response. But you also shouldn't speak to everything, because you don't have the right contexts/backgrounds. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, which is really unfortunate. I think you handle it well.

I just want to be clear about one thing because I think it’s important. John and I are not white male middle class heterosexuals. We are white male UPPER class heterosexuals. A lot of people use weird definitions of middle class...like both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton seem to think that people making as much as $250,000 per year are middle class. I disagree. I think rich people should fess up, admit that they are rich (at the very least to themselves), and accept whatever comes with that. If scorn or shame is the price of having the power and comfort and advantage that comes with wealth, that’s fine with me. Comfort the afflicted...afflict the comfortable. And that means me.
