Alex double-checked the locks on the windows; the faint click of each bolt sounded louder than it should have. It was probably just the leftover adrenaline from the scary movie Tayla begged her to watch. Something stupid that had gotten under her skin in a rather uncomfortable way.
She turned, focusing her gaze on the stack of pre-made lunches Tayla had moved from the fridge to the white countertop. Alex chuckled to herself a little, her younger sister had been planning out which ones to eat throughout the week. Tayla's horrible chicken scratch was barely legible on the brown paper bags. Alex adjusted the stack, setting them back into the fridge in the same order Tayla needed.
Everything Tayla needed for school was exactly where it should be, exactly where it always was. Alex's fingers lingered over the doorframe for a moment, going over the plan for tomorrow one more time in her head before settling into the couch for a few minutes before she went into the studio.
Alexandra knelt on the wooden floor, hands deep in the cool, malleable clay she'd brought home. Her eyes traced every curve, every imperfection, correcting them with a near obsessive precision. She knew exactly how she wanted this piece to turn out, and she was going to make it perfect.
The scent of wet clay was grounding to Alex, the city outside was loud, gross, and cruel. But in here? Alex had control. She pressed her fingers into the figure, feeling it resist and yield in equal measure. Alexandra's brow furrowed, and the figure shifted slightly beneath her hands, responding to her will as if it understood the shape she wanted it to become.
Alex didn't notice her hands beginning to sink into the clay as she worked, her mind falling dark before lighting up bright enough to make her hiss. A vision of the figure cracking. Sharp, jagged lines against the surface. Alex paused. She was so close to finishing this piece, hurrying would only make the vision come true. With a deep breath, she continued, slowing her hands. Patience was her friend.
Finally, Alexandra leaned back to examine her piece. It was a little golem, awaiting it's intention. Her hands hovered over the piece, it was complete. Every line, every curve, every subtle imperfection deliberate. The golem held its form, perfect but organic, and she felt a rare sense of satisfaction wash over her. She hadn't made a golem in years. Well, not a successful one.
The golem glowed faintly, awaiting its intention. Alex ran a careful finger along its head, testing the solidity, and smiled. For a moment, she allowed herself to linger in the triumph. Tayla would pick an intention for it tomorrow. Perhaps the golem would brush her hair as Tayla did her makeup?
Alex didn't like creating her own intentions for the golems, there was too much possibility for her to abuse that power. She hated that. The last few she'd created had been playmates and babysitters for when Alex was working. The girls' mother was rarely ever home, and when she was, she was sleeping.
She didn't blame her mom for being distant. Her father had disappeared two weeks after Tayla was born. That kind of pain must have hurt. Tayla was seven now.
