What is your interpretation of Alicent/Viserys in the book?
I somehow felt this question was coming, haha. Well, let us start with the fact that it's inherently pretty different. The age difference is still pretty wack, but not as bad in ASOIAF standards (18 and 29 I believe?). I generally still believe she was still pushed towards him after Aemma's death - Viserys, while very well liked by the noblefolk and smallfolk, was still never described as a particularly attractive man and was considered stout and not exactly a gorgeous king in vibe. She also seems to be pretty active in the court as she was reading for King Jaehaerys before him (who I don't believe she ever did something with! putting it out there because it needs to be said). Overall she seems to have been put in positions close to the kings; to me it reads as Otto making sure she would have those positions. Viserys in the book is not a horribly neglectful father to her children, but he does seem to ignore the fact that the Hightowers probably wanted this marriage to begin with because they wanted to have a son of Alicent on the throne. There was certainly some bitterness in that, because in a patriarchial society like theirs it's more likely Alicent would assume he sees fault in her son (or a fault in her/her line) to not inherit rather than seeing it as him just wanting his eldest to inherit. She likely had complexes about being lesser than Aemma, tbh - she even tries to negotiate with him over marrying Rhaenyra and Aegon, but that doesn't work either and he sees her as grasping. Which - maybe she is! but I think it's also reasonable to assume she would also know her son would also be perceived as lesser and a failure for some reason because he is skipped over. Their society isn't particularly nice about it. I think Viserys is more laid back while Alicent is much more uptight in how they think things should be done. Alicent "there are rules in place" Hightower while Viserys "I am king, I make those rules" Targaryen. They don't mix well personality wise, but I suppose there are times they would still work. Regardless, the problems with the children, especially after Driftmark when Viserys brushes off the maiming of Aemond (who I personally believe became the favorite child then because Alicent couldn't do much to get him justice) definitely soured their relationship to the point of no return. That is without mentioning of course that she does not mix with Rhaenyra the favorite child of Viserys; I think at the beginning she wasn't trying to be malicious but that got fucked up very quickly when things didn't work out the way expected. So yeah, Viserys and Alicent definitely had a very hard time during these times. And well, clearly it presented in how thing ended the moment he died - Alicent's concerns and wishes that were disregarded were brought back up. She acted the wife she was asked to be until the end - and now it was her turn; fuck what her late husband wanted and all. He didn't listen to her anyway, lol.
