notes on npg’s design / characterisationy bits i have in my head

i am very aware that one of the key aspects of npg’s character is that he’s very rigid. he’s meant to be very simple but i needed to do some more character work so he didn’t fall too flat next to people like evil x lol, and so i could end up using him in a wider range of situations.

this ‘character work’ was mostly just expanding his “scope” to something along the lines of an “idealised domesticity” (idk). he sort of acts as evil x and worm man’s landlord (except the rent is free), and he justifies a lot of his ‘kindness’ with the idea that if things are kept in order, then he’ll have more time to work on his rustic houses. he genuinely does care about them, though, and sort of acts as a mentor figure

the mentor figure thing comes more from his role as a teacher in the rustic house tutorial

npg knows things. he has a deeper understanding of the Truth of the world compared to the rest of the hermitclones. while the Truth isn’t on mind-shattering, insanity-inducing lovecraft levels of awful, its still pretty unnerving and so npg deliberately chooses to focus on the things he can control - aka almost everything in the rustic house.

i’ve alluded to npg’s copy of frankenstein before but i depicted him with it here because there’s some light, fun (or not so fun) parallels- mostly between him and the creature. daddy issues amirite lads

npg read a lot of human literature in order to better understand ex and worm man’s behaviour (and later the rest of the flatmates- badtimes, hels) but oftentimes that information inconveniences him because the others aren’t familiar with the works he references

from a design standpoint, npg’s windup key is meant to show how he’s a bit “analogue” (while robot grian is more overtly digital). the key doesn’t have any in-universe function, though. i’m not sure if npg would have facial expressions or a rigid face plate, but i’d imagine that the key would spin in response to strong emotions (getting wound up, haha).

You would think that Mumbo and Hels wouldn't be anything like each other if you saw them for like, half a second. In reality, they are a lot like each other, even sharing the same stim toys! They both have autism and SPD, and they met when Hels made a club for him and Ex

Mumbo found the club on accident, (after just getting rejected by a few certain avians who thought he was too weird even for them) and after a while Mumbo became the new co-head of the club, after venting about what happened Hels vowed to kill them

Ex and Wormman are the same way, but with just enough smarts to realize that they were in love when they were. Hels has to ask Ex if chewing the same chewlery counted as an indirect kiss. {in Ex's experience, it does.}

Hels and Ex are beyond stunned when they find out that it was not either of them, but Mumbo and Wormman who killed Grian, Zedaph, And False. False did respawn {even though she was supposed to permadie and stuff}, but only because of being remorseful and stuff. So she died, came back to life, and promptly apologized.

This was because they mistook her species, she was an angel bound to certain accustoms (angels are known to be quite cruel, it was just an instinct they have whenever they saw something bad happening, she had to join as well)

They forgave her, and she became a fallen angel, and had to learn what was actually things that a good person would do by the other hermitgals, Cleo and Stress

NPG and Robot Grian are adopted children of both couples, and the other hermits are supportive and stuff, only Zed, False, and Grian were jerks {I hc Zed to be kind of a jerk toward Wormman, and Grian was a jerkwad sent out by the watchers to do... jerk things, but accidentally created good robots from a mishap, and fool others into thinking they were evil. False is just misunderstood :) }

Angels are typically jerks but they are also really powerful especially Fallen angels, so people who are mean to hers [romantically and not] (Mumbo, Hels, Ex, Wormman, Stress, Cleo, NPC and Robogri) she’ll get rid of them permanently, though the possessiveness does make it difficult to be nicer to those she finds unworthy. She just wants what’s best for her friends and partners.

Out of the Nether Crew; which contains NPG (Neo/Grian's youngest cyborg sibling), Robot G (Ricky/Grian's brother who had an accident and needed to be transferred to a robot body), Ex (Xanthi/Xisuma's little twin brother.), Dr. Tagno (Tango's cousin), Grimdog (Ren's older brother and gives camera help), Zedeath (Zedaph's cousin and camera help), True (False's sister and camera help), Aries (Gem's Yin to her Yang/Fae cousins and cam help), BadTimeWirhScar (Scix/Scar's brother), and Hels (Wels' half brother); most have been banned from the kitchen for various reasons.

Scix isn't allowed even near the kitchen because he is always brewing potions, and he sometimes forgets to clean his hands off and everyone ends up poisoned by one of the experimental potions.

Hels isn't allowed because he accidentally sets fire to everything (even water), though he does know how to make alcohol.

True, Ricky, and Zedeath are not allowed due to not caring when they do cook something, so it leads to lots of smoke, though sometimes it is edible.

Dr. Tagno isn't allowed in the kitchen either because he doesn't know the proper cooking temperatures for meats and breads and such and will bring the food to life to be a minion instead.

Aries knows how to make soups and stews, and Grimdog just does simple foods and drinks because he is lazy.

But all the nether crew look forward to when Xanthi or Neo cooks.

Neo bakes all sorts of sweets and cookies and cakes and they love him for it.

Ex knows how to cook and cook well. It comes from living with a parent, aunt, and brother who forget about food. His Pops taught him medicine and how to cook. He used to cook all the time before Jeff fucked with his life, so cooking for the Crew brings back good memories.

Though, everyone gets worried when Neo and Xanthi bake at the same time, because joint baking usually happens after emotional breakdowns. Cuddles happen after they finish baking.

They have really different cooking styles because with baking you have to be exact but with actual cooking you could put how much seasoning you want in something and it wouldn’t matter

My Hels/NPG/Ex one got a little misinterpreted but I love what it led to.l so I love it. But I also am gonna try again.

Hels loves cuddles, but doesn't admit it due to needing to keep a certain image. He survived the Arena (a place demons sent people to kill or be killed) after all. Hugs and cuddles help him feel loved the most, but he never admits it. He also likes to do Acts of Service for his precious boys.

Ex is hesitant about all physical contact due to torture he went through with the Evil Voice (Jeff). He prefers Words of affirmation and is okay with Quality Time.

NPG loves to bake. So he loves giving gifts and he loves Quality Time. He also loves cuddles. Being locked in a closet makes him want to not be left alone after all.

NPG is usually the one pulling Ex or Hels into cuddles. Sometimes both at the same time, but not often enough.

Hels also notes how Ex acts to cuddles and wonders if it is his fault because of how he acts, as Ex is hesitant to physical touch.

At one point. Hels didn't get cuddles for a couple weeks, leaving him a bit depressed. He goes to hide in Wels closet because no one will think to look for him there...even if his brother hates him. So he hides and cries. He has to stay strong. He has to.

They really need to talk, good for them is that NPG is good at reading emotions and more than willing to cuddle Hels to make up for the weeks that he didn’t get cuddled. Ex however doesn’t really get how dependent Hels is to cuddles and would much rather be in the same room as Hels without touching him. So movie nights often end with NPG and Hels cuddled up on the loveseat, and Ex curled up in a nearby armchair while watching his partners

Hels secretly loved to cuddle and not go anywhere. He would never admit this to his boyfriends (Ex and NPG) though.

NPG and Ex love cuddles themselves, but NPG also loves to give gifts. Ex enjoyed words of affirmation.

Hels doesn't like when instead of cuddles, they do words of affirmation or gifts, but he understands it. It's rare that he doesn't get cuddle time during a day.

Though, they did have an argument that got bad, he didn't get cuddles for weeks, so he decided to hide. In Wels's Closet. He was sure his brother wouldn't mind him sobbing in his closet.

Hels wasn’t really sure, why he felt claustrophobic when they cuddle him. It really boils down to being touch repulsive but he does love his boyfriends he just wishes they didn’t drag him into cuddles
